  • McCain's replacement is Jon Kyle

Jon Kyle is a retired Arizona senator and Republican with Conservative credentials. He will be replacing McCain at least through the end of this Congressional session and says he has no intention to run for election in 2020 when McCain's seat comes up. I will say this. He is much more reliably Conservative than McCain was.

It can only be an improvement.
Any man can hold his place when the bands play and women throw flowers; it is when the enemy presses close and metal shears through the ranks that one can acertain which are soldiers, and which are not.

        Excellent pick.
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fate but strong in will
To strive to seek to find and not to yield.

              Except the Russians.

What does than mean, "conservative"? Was Geo W Bush's expansion of the security state "conservative"? Was Rick Santorum's jihad in the bedroom "conservative"? Are Trump's proposals to expand Federal infrastructure spending and tighten imports "conservative"? With the exception of Santorum's particular brand of uptightness, Bush's and Trump's initiatives have been distinctly statist in flavor, reminiscent of anything that had come out of the Clinton and Obama administrations, or Bernie Sanders' socialist presidential campaign. And Santorum's moral crisis was identical to Michael Bloomberg's war on soda, only aimed at loins, not bellies. So what, pray tell, does it mean to be "reliably conservative" any more -- 'cause if Bush and Trump are conservative, then the very word itself is nowadays rendered utterly meaningless.

When a self-proclaimed "conservative" can repudiate Barry Goldwater, then we're definitely looking down the rabbit hole, way, way down the rabbit hole. What's next, communists against Marx, Christians against Christ?
