  • Demise of the battery car and Tesla

It's looking like Musk's Ponzi scheme with Tesla is coming into the final stages. He's calling for the company to go "private," a way out of having to open the books so much to public scrutiny. As of late Tesla's stock is tanking, down about 15% in the last couple of weeks. Buyers with deposits are starting to want their deposits back. I suspect a couple more quarters of underperformance and Tesla is done.

Government subsidies for battery cars are also ending for Tesla...

If you put down cash for a Tesla, I'd suggest you get a refund before the company goes under.

Tesla's demise will have nothing to do with the battery. It's the Autopilot feature.

Tesla got massive Gov assistance here in NY to open a plant in the Buffalo area. In an area that once had 60,000+ American men and women, black and white Christian alike working for American automobile and steel companies in protected Union Jobs setting folks for life....well a few years back in 2014 or so Tesla opened up a plant in Buffalo not a US Steel company but it was Telsa coming in...

The Tesla Gigafactory 2 is a photovoltaic (PV) cell factory, leased by Tesla subsidiary SolarCity in Buffalo, New York. The factory, owned by the state of New York, was built on a remediated brownfield site from a former steel mill. Construction on the factory started in 2014 and was completed in 2016–17.

Many Americans who care wonder how this disgrace is going on...how America is not what it used to be. Look above a once sprawling city Buffalo with great middle class jobs is not what it used to be having largely been taken over by greed and corruption. There is no excuse for the USA to not lead the world in Steel and Automobile production. President Trump can make a difference here.

I drive by the old Steel sights where in the 1940s Americans in the tens of thousands in Buffalo helped the allies to save the world from slavery. That was when America had honor. Well folk today in our country in Buffalo that Tesla plant employs a few hundred folks in non Union jobs in an are that once had 60,000 great American steel and auto jobs...this is a decimation of the middle class jobs and of American prestige but their is always hope for change.

God be with those Americans working for Tesla whom do not have a union and have no protection...hope they can eventually get into a job with security like at Republic Steel which hopes to rise up.

Prison and Law Enforcement jobs still pay well as they should . But unless American steel and Automobile comeback, the USA is going to continue to suffer. The American Auto and Steel worker is what won the allies WW2.

You must have zero understanding of how costly and risky complex technological innovation is.

Yes, it's wonderful that one of the world's most innovative companies is having troubles because it is a "political/ideological enemy" of mindless, brainwashed conservatives and big oil...

Republic Steel in Buffalo once employed 20,000 people including those that helped the allies win WW2. This Tesla plant which the Gov of NY allotted over a billion dollars toward, employees today a few hundred in non Union jobs. The vast majority of American men and women want the American steel and factory jobs back.

FDR was a great Gov of NY, that is the American spirit needed to defeat the corrupt employers and Gov officials.

Don't fret, Trump is trying to save the steel industry. The Gov of NY better shut his trap and start making nice. My friend in PA said many people working in steel are back to work. They credit Trump and plan to vote for him in 2020.

"You must have zero understanding on how automotive companies work."

Tesla never had more than a niche market. Auto companies selling to a single high end market never ever succeed. It has NOTHING to do with "Big Oil." Where DO you get these weird ideas? As it stands, electric cars and hybrids are coming on to the market (but at realistic prices and expectations) by all the major auto companies who have very deep pockets and experienced engineers, managers, and work force.

One of Musk's biggest mistakes was to try and build a factory where there is no experience for that type of work in the labor market, and it showed. Being "innovative" means nothing if you do not know how to actually run and operate a production line.

The problem with the Teslas were that their auto steering mechanisms do not work reliably, they catch on fire (there is a reason that the roads are not full of Pintos), are wayyyy to expensive for the average person, have little real range in anything like real world conditions, and take too long to "refuel" even if one can find someplace to do so. In the long run, without a massive and extremely expensive enlargement of electrical production and transmission the all electric car is a dead end.

There is nothing particularly innovative about a battery powered car.

Whatever replaces fossil fuel powered automobiles in a century will be attacked by the same personality types who hate "big oil". I'm sure that there will also be some environmental disaster associated with battery powered cars if they ever become mainstream.

Like socialist who don't really love the poor but just hate the rich, a lot of environmentalist don't really love nature they just hate humanity.

No, Tesla is producing a car that costs $50,000 + and usually more like in excess of $75,000. At the same time this vehicle has limited appeal to only those living in urban areas who don't do long drives. Throw in that the production rate is nearly nonexistent, that the government subsidies to buy one are about to dry up, and that there's quality control issues with them and you have a near perfect storm of how not to build a car.

Tesla's mega battery factory also faces a problem. The technology they're using is obsolescent and within a decade will be obsolete. There's a polymer based lithium ion battery that is just coming into production status that will render the factory's process obsolete. That would mean a massive investment to retool the factory to make this newer and much safer battery.

Tesla made it this far riding in good part on government subsidies from a compliant Obama administration who wanted green battery cars. Too bad the public isn't buying the things regardless.

Yes its good news, its a start. A few hundred folk in PA have been able to get steel jobs back, the types of American jobs which unlike Tesla offer employees a Union and Protection. Hope is that tens of thousands in PA area , Detroit and Buffalo will be back to working at Steel and Auto plants.

The unions which feature so prominently in your post are one of the major reasons why the once thriving auto industry went under. Same for steel. It comes down to product costs in an intensely competing world-wide market place.
