  • Why January 24th should be a holiday!

    Why you ask?
Simple, the most important and successful engineering feat in modern history was introduced to the public on this day in 1935.
Something we take for granted today. It was the result of years of trial and error, a challenge that had stumped the most talented engineers since the introduction of canned food.
It changed the life of many soldiers and sailors and during WWII, the Korean War and all wars since has brought comfort and a little bit of home to the battle field.
It has made it possible for better use of food storage and has changed the way we celebrate every holiday, every camping trip.
What you ask could possibly have such impact on mankind?
On this day, January 24, 1935, canned beer was first introduced.
Canning companies had been trying to can beverages for a couple of decades before succeeding. Canned or tinned foods were already popular, so canned beverages were a natural extension for this type of packaging. However, the canning industry encountered three specific problems. One was Prohibition; if beer couldn't be sold, there was no sense in trying to can it. Another was pressure. The carbonation in beer was so powerful that early can prototypes would explode, which is not a big selling point; companies had to figure out how to strengthen cans and tops so that consumers didn't have to worry about being showered with metal and beer. The third was that the beer would react with the can material, and manufacturers had to develop a liner that protected the beer from the metal.
    So let’s celebrate today!

Churchill to Chamberlain: you had a choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war.
