I would highly recommend the books of Diane Ravitch on the state of current US public education.

Her books The Language Police and Reign of Error are especially useful addressing the current problems.

If anyone is interested, get the books and read them. If not, please keep chasing windmills with the current level of nonsense about education being displayed in various venues.

The result is they are so disruptive of a class as to make it impossible for the ones that actually want to learn something.

That's not the worst part - the worst part is that these are the future workers, teachers and leaders of America.

Can't remember the guy's name, but this academic was interviewed extensively for Ric Burns' (brother to Ken of Civil War and Vietnam documentaries fame) doc of NYC, and he explained in exquisite detail how one of FDR's New Deal programs served to segregate communities: how Brooklyn went from the nation's most integrated county in the 1920s to one of the most segregated by the 1970s. Very poorly thought out social policy: the inevitable result of demanding that government "do something."
