  • A Motion Picture...And An Idea...

I just watched the movie 'The Magnificent Yankee' about Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. It is an excellent character study and one which I would highly recommend to all here.

One thread that is continuous throughout the movie is that people are complaining that the country 'is going to the dogs.'

Justice Holmes, who was a thrice-wounded Civil War veteran of the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, displays uncanny and unwavering loyalty and faith in the United States, no matter who is president. It is a quality worth savoring and emulating.

Having served my country both in uniform and out for 47 years, I can identify with the Justice and he also reminds me of an old friend of mine, who is unfortunately no longer with us. He also had undying faith in the country, its history, and those who founded and fought for the country.

He also reminded me of an old axiom from the early days of the federal republic which is as true today as it was then: 'God looks out for idiots, drunks, little children, and the United States of America.'

And as Justice Holmes said often, the country is not going to the dogs, no matter how many people say or believe that.
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fate but strong in will
To strive to seek to find and not to yield.

Looks like he isn't up to date on the news.

You watch Turner Classic too, huh?

I agree. Every generation has people lamenting that the end is nigh and we're finally going into the tar pits.

      And it never happens.

People are resilient. Nations change but rarely truly fall.
A new life awaits you in the off world colonies; the chance to begin again in a golden land of opportunity and adventure!

Yeah, well, I'm sure he'd sh*t himself in his grave if he knew what was going to happen to his statue (bust).

Wow...I never thought I would ever see anyone who is a member of a HISTORY forum make that comment.

History is replete with failed cultures ,societies and world encompassing empires - all FAILED, fallen and gone. Seen any Incans around lately? Toltecs? Olmecs? Anybody seen the Roman Empire lately? Troy? How about the Carthaginians?

Hmmm...nope...maybe we should be asking the former Eastern European nations who vanished into the maw of the Soviet Union after WWII. Or the old Soviet Union itself.
First, of course, we would need a refresher course in what the maps of Eastern Europe looked like before WWII.

Or maybe we should just ask all of the 'stans bordering the Soviet Union what they used to be, or the tribal nations of Africa or the Middle East before Europe sat down and redrew their world into someone else's.

History is a constant litany of nations that go under and are absorbed or vanish all together, and America is no different. In fact, because we invented nuclear weapons, we are complacent and convinced that we are somehow invulnerable, even to attack from within.

It can happen, and if the present government corruption, apathy and civil unrest continue unchecked it will happen, just as it has over and over and over again throughout history. Ask the Romans if you don't believe me. They knew they couldn't fail, either.

It is the wishful thinking of people that have an inkling, somewhere deep inside, of how badly they are screwing things up.

Hey, constantly repeating a lie has always worked so well in the lang run, right?

Ain't it just amazing, how the very same people who deny American Exceptionalism are always telling us that everything will be fine if we just keep following them into a Socialist future... forever and ever, amen.

It works so well for Venezuela, after all.

History is replete with failed nations and cultures and I didn't say it wasn't. I just said that change is more common than collapse overall.

Even the "fall" of Rome is more change than collapse. If you were a citizen of Rome (the city) things sure got apocalyptic. But if you lived in Constantinople it was just a shift and if you were a Goth you might even consider it an improvement. Different perspectives from different angles.

England has seen numerous changes but has never truly fallen since its formal founding. And it is one example of many.

I also didn't say that America is invulnerable to collapse. I simply said that collapse is predicted in every generation and often fails to materialize. I'm all for us being smart and resisting idiotic policies. I'm no radical leftist or Alex Jones nutjob. I just don't think America is as fragile as some people say.

That is an apt description of the Trumpers.

And it should be noted that Holmes was a Republican.

It seems to me that those here that are blind followers of Trump and swallow everything he says, most of which are lies, are still willing to follow him down a path that is against everything this country stands for.

Start shelling out the same salary, and I'd be glad to.

So you agree with the other 77 and still supported him?
