  • A Message for the Left (Both here and in general)

Something I've felt like writing after months of hostility:

    Dear Liberals,

I am a conservative who voted for Donald Trump. Let me tell you about myself. I live in a small town. It's actually quite prosperous. Despite what some in the media may have told you I do have a college education. I go to church and I've thumped some Bibles but the Bible thumpings have been directed at other Christians for reasons you'd probably approve of. ( http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forum...7&#post3143367 ) I find beauty in any religion that doesn't try to attack me. My religion is full of potlucks and church families as close as biological ones. I have a few sponsor kids in India and Sri Lanka that I love like my own. One of them is all grown up. Good guy too. My day consists of pencil pushing and keyboard punching. I may never march in the infantry, ride in the cavalry, shoot the artillery but I'm in the lord's army - and still I'm an REMF . I've never oppressed anything beyond the plastic pieces in Quartermaster General. I've never attacked another human being with anything besides D20s. In general I try to be a nice guy.

Yes I voted for Trump. I think he's about as perfect as you thought your candidate was. I agree with him at times, disagree with him at times, and roll my eyes at times. But yes I voted for him and as of now still would.

Now I'm all about having a dialogue but in light of all the furor I wanted to make a few things clear. If you want to engage me as a human being, if you're willing to acknowledge that I'm an everyday American trying to do the right thing just like most of us are then welcome aboard. Let's talk this out and feel free to tell me when I'm getting temperamental. But if you want to judge the sum of my character based on my filling a ballot circle you don't like, to blast me as either hateful or stupid because of the candidate I picked, to equate me with white nationalists I feel could go jump in a lake, then blow me. Don't bother with calling me xenophobic. Multinational cooperation is my bag. Dispense with labeling me an evangelical just because I go to church and vote Republican at the same time. Spare me your buzzwords.

Democracy is messy and emotions can run high. If you're willing to meet me as one respected American citizen to another then let's chat. I'll do my best to check my own biases at the door and maybe we can work out a course we can both be comfortable with. But I'm through being strawmanned, generalized, and excoriated. If that's what you've got to offer then beat it.

    Signed,

    A Conservative American
A new life awaits you in the off world colonies; the chance to begin again in a golden land of opportunity and adventure!

Well written but it might be more believable if we hadn't had 8 years of rabid anti-Obamaism on this site and in which you freely took part.

I find it hilarious that when the Right was excoriating Obama for just about anything he did up to and including going golfing, the Right wants civilized debate. When the now banned libt*** and other derogatory terms were used describe anyone disagreeing with critics of Obama or anyone else not conversvative, that was okay with the vast majority here. But now that tide is not so much in your favor, now that some here that were on the conservative side of things but can't stand Trump and are speaking out against him, you're whining about being called names because you voted for a man who admits to groping women, who's defrauded thousands of people and cheated hard working blue collar workers by declaring bankruptcy 4 times? Seriously? It's only been 7 months. You've got 3 and a half years to go and possibly 7 1/2 (God help us in that case). I suggest you man up and grow thicker skin.

In other words as so many here stated after the election: Deal With It.

Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

I'm Scottish - I voted for Sturgeon, and against May.

Obama was disappointing to us, since he promised much, but delivered little, while Trump is already shaping up to be the nut-job we always thought he was.
      Indyref2 - still, "Yes."

Your trying to have a rational discussion with people who think Marx was an economist. Good luck with that kind of crazy :-)

          To whom are you referring?

Seems to me that you have a rather distorted picture of the political spectrum.
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are we are; One equal temper of heroic hearts
Made weak by time and fate but strong in will
To strive to seek to find and not to yield.

"It has become fashionable to think that Karl Marx was not mainly an economist but instead integrated various disciplines—economics, sociology, political science, history, and so on—into his philosophy. But Mark Blaug, a noted historian of economic thought, points out that Marx wrote “no more than a dozen pages on the concept of social class, the theory of the state, and the materialist conception of history” while he wrote “literally 10,000 pages on economics pure and simple.”1"

But you usually strawmann, generalize, and excoriate liberals.

My beef with Obama was the ACA and his excessive executive orders. That was about it.

And Dems voted for Bill Clinton. I'm not condemning them for that.

I know you're a decent guy, so I'll pursue this. I don't deny being biased against Obama. I own that. And I've never considered you less of an American for being pro Obama. So I don't feel I'm being unreasonable in asking for the same respect in return. I'm not asking for a courtesy I don't give so there's no whining to it. I respect you as an honorable American. Will you return the favor? If you will then let's discuss this. If you feel that my mere voting for Trump disqualifies me from polite discourse then yes I'll be happy to part ways. There's no point in growing thick skin for toxic people. You don't profit from their abuse and its best to leave them in their pit.

But I'd like to think you aren't a toxic person.

Why the sarcasm? I'm not saying that like I'm doing you a favor or putting on airs. I'm simply saying that to illustrate a desired mutual courtesy. Is there anything wrong with mutual courtesy? Why should another person be dehumanized or sneered at for voting a different ticket?

And on the other side, with people who think Obama is a Marxist. An equivalent sort of crazy :-)

Liberals and Marx, are you sure? Why in the USA does the label Liberal get used to indicate something that is in actual fact illiberal?

Because Americans don't know what liberal means.
They think it has to do with being a socialist. They invented the notion of "classical liberalism" in order to validate their redefinition of the word.

Many of my countrymen don't realize that America is a very socialist country with many things run and owned by governments that in other country's they think are socialist are owned by private firms.
