  • French fighter jets stage flyover over New York harbor

    NEW YORK (AP) ó French Air Force fighter jets have staged a colorful flyover across New York Harbor.

    The eight Alpha Jets from the Patrouille de France streaked across the sky Saturday, making designs with trailing red, white and blue display smoke. The jets were accompanied by an A400 airbus and two additional Alpha jets who will be documenting the mission.

    Officials say the event was staged to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the United States entry into World War I and reaffirm the historic ties between France and the U.S.

      Now there's one classic picture. Too bad the weather appears rather greyish.

        Glad to know that we have a flyable A 400 , and that the alpha jets are fighters
        Seriously , a most needed proof of friendship between our 2 countries.

          Watched some of their maneuvers on fox news, also an interview with one of their pilots, I was impressed!

            No France > No United States of America!

            Even when we seem to be at each others throats most Americans are still quite conscious of that.

            Cant speak for the younger generations, much, I'm not so sure they even teach that history in some schools anymore.

              As a sign of friendship, we shall graciously rename Freedom Fries as "French Fries" and Liberty Toast as "French Toast".

              As a further gracious gesture, we shall also lift our boycott on French's Mustard even though it will not benefit France whatsoever because French's is an American company.

                I see, so no more 'cheese eating surrender monkeys' then, that's refreshing to know.
                Bush said that because France sensibly flat out refused to go along with Bush's war then they are and must be a nation of cowards, he actually called them 'cheese eating surrender monkeys'

                Perhaps you ought to be grateful that you do have righteous nations on your side

                    It was a Scottish guy that coined that term.

                    Perhaps you ought to consider your own history and back up the nonsense your accusations.

                    BTW, why the hell do you want to talk crap in an appreciation thread?

                      Iirc , this is Matt Groening who popularized the expression in a Simpsons episode .

                          Silly name changing appears to be one of the less attractive US reactions to a crisis as in WW1

                          Hamburgers = Liberty burgers
                          Frankfurters = Liberty Sausage
                          German Shepards = Alsatians, Police Dogs etc
                          Dachshunds = Badger Dogs, Sausage Dogs

                          Its much the same as thinking that making up and using a silly name for one's political opponent is the epitome of political wit. From a nation that brought forth the likes of Bierce, Twain, Runyon. O Henry, Menken, Steinbeck and other great masters of cutting with words this is like deploying playground soakers when you posses rapiers

                          It would seem appropriate for the Alpha jets to have laid a trail in front of the Statue of Liberty another great symbol of French support for American values (and sadly ones no longer in fashion)

                            I can't prove it, you're right.

                            Perhaps others can take notice of how easy and in fact free-ing it is to be honest enough to come clean?

                            There is no correlation between your former draft dodging president and Matt Groening's hilarious but misplaced accusations of the French being cheese eating surrender monkeys.
                            He was happy to NOT stop fast food outlets re-naming their chips as freedom fries rather than French fries though, there can be no doubt that because the French refused to go along with Bush's war it was open day on anything Gallic and that while not official US policy it was nevertheless condoned.

                            A truly pathetic reaction to another allied nations decision not to follow them blindly into a groundless war as the UK stupidly and trustingly did.

                            So yes, Bush never said 'cheese eating surrender monkeys' and it is just supposition to think he was amused by it.

                            Are you happy now?
