  • Department of Energy subagency fraud, waste, and abuse

One more reason to slash federal budgets, if you needed one...

A regional power utility that serves much of the western United States is under multiple federal investigations for possible fraud, waste and abuse, according to records obtained by ABC15.
The Western Area Power Administration, or WAPA, is a division of the United States Department of Energy that sells power to wholesale electric utilities, municipalities, tribes and other agencies in 15 western states, including Arizona, that serve millions of people.*

ABC15 has learned that whistleblowers told federal investigations about outlandish spending within WAPA, especially involving government credit cards. A source said the fraud and waste reached millions of dollars in recent years.

Local news showed footage of stuff found in the investigation including, firearms and accessories, fully loaded 4 x 4 pickups, and off road vehicles that individuals within the agency purchased then kept for themselves. It isn't like one or two people either, but lots using government credit cards among other means to buy this stuff.

A source said? I don't know. Sounds to me and the Donald like fake news.
Conservatives in the U.S. won't be happy until Jim Crow returns and "White Heterosexual Only" signs are legalized.

Good. The more Federal waste exposed, the easier to cut them to size.

You'd be wrong. There are multiple investigations going on against this agency and the local news had more video and interviews than you can find on the net. They showed some of the vehicles and the government employees that bought them illegally for their personal use.

That is no evidence for not being fake news.

Accusing a Federal agency of waste is like accusing ISIS of mistreating women. You might not have the right date, but you're still hitting the truth.

Are you... yes, you must be...

...sent a letter to U.S. Department of Energy Inspector General Rickey Hass this week asking for an update on the agency’s investigation into past reports and allegations of waste, fraud and abuse within the Desert Southwest Region (DSW) of the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA). The senators sent a letter the Department of Energy last October urging the agency to examine concerns raised about WAPA’s questionable practices, which have negatively impacted power customers in Arizona.

According to a report by the local television station,*federal lawmakers in November sent WAPA a letter criticizing the agency for failing to turn over requested documents.

There is also a criminal investigation, headed by the Department of Energy's Office of Inspector General, examining the possibility of fraud and waste at WAPA.

Credit card statements and receipts obtained by ABC15 highlight the high-dollar and extremely questionable purchases:
                - An employee bought $2,933 of ammunition even though WAPA employees don’t have government-issued guns.
                - There were thousands of dollars spent on specialized weapons gear, including multiple *$1,200 rife scopes.
                - Dozens of handwritten receipts – some for thousands of dollars, were submitted and approved.
                - One employee bought himself a $14,000 ATV, Cloud said. Receipts show the employee spread the loan payments out over several months on his government credit card.
“We found a lot of really questionable purchases along the way – high dollar purchases,” said Cloud, whose team of internal security officials investigated the purchases. “We had an individual who was exceeding over $50,000 a month.”

That sound like fraud, waste, and abuse? Huh? Does that sound like the report by the media (ABC 15) has reasonable validity? Huh?

So ABC isn't fake news by mutual agreement. Good, we cleared that name off the list. Now we can move on to the next source.

"Fake news" all depends on the subject and who's on the A list at the time.
