The election of Trump proves and is the result of the bankruptcy of the US political class ,both Democrats and Republicans .Without Trump, the choice would be between the Democratic Hillary and the Republican Hillary ,but the electors had enough .

8 november was a breaking point in the US history, more than the election of Lincoln .

What is uncertain is if this breakpoint will last, if it will be definitive . I doubt it :both parties (Democratd and Republicans ) will do everything to block Trump and to prevent him from obtaining even the smallest success, because they know what is on stake : if Trump succeeds, other Trumps will come and the rule of the Washingtonian elite (donors, politicians, media ) will be over .

All the 2016 election proved, as similar past elections have, is when the Left gets into power they rarely are able to retain it for long... unless they can establish a one-party dictatorship.

Hillary failed in part because of the failures of Obama. The US public grew tired of Progressive "Hope and change" and wanted no part in continuing it. The growing flip of the "rust belt," a previously solidly Democrat stronghold, is one proof of that. Outside a handful of states on the two coasts, the Democrats are losing their ability to win elections at all.
The majority of states have Republican governors. The majority of states have Republican legislatures. As of this election, the Republicans retain control of the federal government too.
The Democrats can whine all they want, but those are facts. The problem with adopting Progressivism and a Leftist doctrine for the Democrats is that it sells well only if the country is messed up economically and it wasn't the Left that did it. Once in power, the Left's problem becomes retaining power because virtually inevitably they make things far worse than they were. Thus, the only way the Left retains power is implementing a police state and dictatorship where they exclude all opposition.

I expect the Democrats to do everything, including violent and illegal stuff, to stop Trump from dismantling any of their beloved programs no matter how badly they've failed.

Take Obamacare for example. If Trump wants it gone, it's done. There is literally nothing the Democrats or Progressives can do to stop that. NOTHING.
All Trump has to do is stop funneling money into the program to prop up insurer losses like Obama is doing (and the GAO says illegally doing it as well). The insurers in the program will all quit leaving no choices at all in the marketplace.
Worse, if that happens, and people don't get insurance outside the Obamacare system (often at higher rates and without subsidy to be sure), they will still get hit with a tax penalty of thousands of dollars. Those with pre-existing conditions likely will also find they are unable to get coverage and be penalized.
A small fraction of Americans will whine about how they preferred and liked Obamacare while the vast majority will want it ended... entirely. Up to this point, Trump doesn't even need Congress to lift a finger. All he has to do is end any and all monies to Obamacare that aren't clearly and absolutely outlined in the law. Obamacare dies.

In energy and Gorebal warming, all that need be done is end funding for "Green" energy programs and research into Gorebal Warming. No money authorized, and both will quickly whither and die. The Republicans need not do anything about academic or Progressive positions on these subjects. Without money flowing into them, they are economically unviable and will die.
Trump unilaterally can end "The war on carbon" too.

          Taxes, takes Congress.

A Conservative supreme court pick ends the Left's hopes of using the courts to get their agenda in place permanently.

So, what the Democrats and Progressives need to do is move to the center and stop listening to the Left as the dominant wing of their party. Unfortunately, it appears they're doubling down on moving left, as I would expect, and that will just make them even more irrelevant in 2018 and 2020.
