  • Gen. John Kelly--->Department of Homeland Security

Another general and, better yet, another Marine joins the Trump administration...
Donald Trump is tapping Gen. John Kelly to run the Department of Homeland Security, CBS News confirms.

The final request and acceptance, sources told CBS’ Major Garrett, occurred while Kelly was traveling in Europe. His pick for DHS secretary will be announced by the transition staff in the coming days.

Kelly is the third general tapped by the president-elect, joining Gen. James Mattis, Mr. Trump’s pick to become the next secretary of Defense, and Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, Mr. Trump’s incoming national security advisor.

Like Mattis, Kelly is a Marine with a reputation for bluntness.

Kelly was the commander of U.S. Southern Command until earlier this year. In that posting, he oversaw American military operations in South America and Central America.

Before that, he commanded American forces numerous times in Iraq, and spent a year as the top Marine in that country. He then was an aide to defense secretaries Leon Panetta and Robert Gates.

The Stars that Presidents get involved in, 4, came directly from President Obama when he appointed him as Commander Southern Command. One of the 'combatant' commands that span the world. His 3rd Start also came during President Obama's tenure.

          A very good choice!
Any man can hold his place when the bands play and women throw flowers; it is when the enemy presses close and metal shears through the ranks that one can acertain which are soldiers, and which are not.

Obama couldn't screw everything up... No one is that perfectly incompetent...

Gen. Kelly has a very impressive résumé...
In March 2003, while in Iraq, Kelly was promoted to brigadier general, which was the first known promotion of a Marine Corps colonel in an active combat zone since that of another First Marine Division assistant division commander, Chesty Puller[5] in January 1951.[6] In mid-April he took command of the newly formed Task Force Tripoli and drove it north from Baghdad into Samarra and Tikrit.[7] During the initial assault on Baghdad, Kelly was asked by a reporter of the Los Angeles Times if (considering the size of the Iraqi Army and the vast supplies of tanks, artillery and chemical weapons available to Saddam's forces) he would ever consider defeat. Kelly's archetypal response was, "Hell these are Marines. Men like them held Guadalcanal and took Iwo Jima. Baghdad ain't ****." [8]

His next assignment was as legislative assistant to the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Michael Hagee In January 2007 Kelly was nominated for major general,[9] and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 11, 2007.[10]

Kelly's next assignment, in July 2007, was as commanding general, I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward).[11] On February 9, 2008 Kelly assumed command of the Multi-National Force–West in Iraq, replacing Major General Walter E. Gaskin.[12] After a year in Iraq Kelly returned to the States in February 2009.[13]

General Kelly is the highest ranking U.S. military officer to have lost a child in combat operations in Southwest Asia. His youngest son, 1st Lieutenant Robert Michael Kelly, was killed in action in Sangin, Afghanistan on November 9, 2010. The younger Kelly was a former enlisted Marine and was on his third combat tour, but on his first combat tour as a U.S. Marine Corps infantry officer. At the time of his death, 1stLt Kelly was with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. Kelly's eldest child is a Marine Corps major.[14][15][16]

Kelly was the senior military assistant to the Secretary of Defense and personally greeted Secretary Panetta at the entrance to the Pentagon on July 1, 2011, Panetta's first day as secretary.

My agency got an armored vehicle and tens of thousands of dollars of military hardware under Bobo's watch. It doesn't mean he supports the police, Texas, or the safety of Americans; it just means that the business of government continues no matter how disloyal the bozo at the top is.

Too many retired Generals in the cabinet may make congress nervous and could hinder the waiver for Mattis, just my take on it.

Or, the establishment continues to march on. Only thing set to change is the rhetoric.

It's simply tradition. Periodically, America used to elect military officers to re presidency. In lieu of that tradition, we now select military officers to serve in high posts to keep an eye n the untrustworthy civilians in our government.
