      Not always. One of the reasons I went with a buttress design was it looks far better than a simple block wall. Engineering is about making it work like it's supposed to. Engineers aren't about esthetics or necessarily cost effectiveness. Engineers often make specifications and designs that are horridly cost ineffective. Seen that regularly over the years.

        There are bad engineers like any other profession. What I have seen more often than bad engineering is contractors who think that experience trumps calculations and end up degrading the quality of a project. Contractors often don't have to live with reduced life expectancy and competition often leads to cutting corners to make a profit. Capitalism is the worst form of social order imaginable but human nature makes it the best economic system. Most people simply cannot deal with contradictions and become dogmatic.
