    Ultimately, the only REAL savings is that invested in the private economy where wealth is created. Guv'mint "savings" and retirement/pensions payouts depend upon taxes taken from the private/wealth creation economy and/or promises(IOUs) to do such in the future.

    As the numbers at this website show, deficit and debt, along with unfunded liabilities, at all levels, Federal/State/local are already at critical thresholds and exceed assets and GDPs. At some future point this bubble bursts and/or dollar devalues such that the guv'mint checks bounce and the other part of the economy flounders as a result.

    If/when that happens, nothing is secure or guaranteed as far as investment~cash flow is concerned.

      Right now it looks like our retirement funding breaks down as around---16% pension, 33% Social Security and 51% 403b/IRA/investments. We can live comfortably on half of it but I know what a good assisted living facility costs so we may need it, but I hope not.
