  • FBI: Hate crimes against Muslims up by 67 percent in 2015

ATLANTA (AP) Reported hate crimes against Muslims rose in 2015 to their highest number since the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to FBI statistics released Monday.

Overall, the total number of hate crimes against all groups reported by law enforcement agencies to the FBI increased from 5,479 in 2014 to 5,850 last year. That remains far lower than the numbers seen in the early 2000s, but the FBI release comes amid numerous reports of attacks nationwide based on race and religion following last week's presidential election.

The most recent reporting covers calendar year 2015, which included the terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California, as well as Republican Donald Trump's call for a ban on all Muslims entering the U.S. All of those, however, did not occur until the final two months of the year.

I wonder how many hate crimes muslims committed during the same period?

That would be a useful statistic.

Plus factor in lethal, non-lethal categories.
Any man can hold his place when the bands play and women throw flowers; it is when the enemy presses close and metal shears through the ranks that one can acertain which are soldiers, and which are not.

Considering they're a fraction of America's population, my guess is very few.

What will be interesting will be how the numbers fare for this year - and the next two years.

If it goes up, Dems will blame it on Trump and his angry rhetoric for the numbers, while Conservatives will defend him and shift blame elsewhere.

If it goes down, Conservatives will blame Obama and his domestic feebleness for the previous spike, while the Dems will defend him and shift the blame elsewhere.

Orlando springs to mind. A huge stack of hate crime felonies right there.

While the incidents are fewer, as you surmised, the body count is staggering.

Sure, but they represented just a fraction of the Americans killed in violent incidents in the US as well. The big flashy stuff gets the headlines, but your day to day murders do the real work in putting numbers up on the board.

It's a moot point whether the public care more about the baseline low level killings that accounts for the majority of deaths or the mass casualty attacks. Islam is certainly making its mark on the later in the U.S. and Europe.

Why would that be moot? The public perception of such events pretty much drives the discussion - and the politics, and the economics. Terrorism as a fear motivates voters and puts millions into bank accounts. Terrorism as a concrete event is a lottery-winning unicorn. The perception is the engine behind the reaction to Islamic terrorism, enabling it to leave its mark.

Apples and oranges. We aren't discussing "day to day" murders, we're discussing islamic terrorism and it's effect on the population.

It's only natural that there will be backlash against islam in general as a result of these attacks. Something our resident would be terrorists should consider.

The lie that islam is a peaceful religion becomes harder to perpetuate after each attack. Sure, there are decent individual muslims, but their voices are rarely heard.

I looked at the actual FBI report and came away unimpressed with the scale of "hate crimes" against muslims.

Per the 2015 statistics there were 1402 victims of anti-religious hate crimes.
52.1 % were directed against jews.
                    21.9% were directed against muslims.
So, in a nation with over 300 million people and an estimated 3.3 million muslims (information found elsewhere), there were less than 300 hate crimes that allegedly involved an anti-islamic aspect.
The crime doesn't have to be motivated by anti-islamic feelings, there just has to be an aspect of "hate" involved in the commission of a crime.

My point is that if you really want ('you' in the general sense) better race relations, the baseline approach is honesty.

Declarations that do not show the entire picture in context are counter-productive.

As Cambronne noted, the stark facts are much less inflammatory than the article would lead you to believe.

So pieces like this are intended to increase racial tension, not decrease it.

Bigotry is just about non existent in the USA. Arguably the US is the most tolerant nation on the planet...probably only trailing behind Canada. Although this report suggests the # of Anti Muslim crimes are rising....the #s of so called hate crimes committed in the USA are extremely low. So even when the # of hate crimes rises by 50-100% it means little.

Americans on this board ought ask them self one question...that is do you have a friend or family member whom is a member of a hate group??? I guarantee everyone here on ACG would say no, I know I would say no.

Anyone who complains about Muslims, Jews, Christians, whites , or blacks has no place in Trumps America just as they had no place in Obama's America. In North Korea you can complain about religion, perhaps anti Muslims can go live in North Korea.

The hate filled Muslims are living in ISIL lands....not here in the USA. Only the ugliest most foul people are against others due to religious and so called racial differences. Bigots argue on a past that did not exist..as if the Roman Empire did not include blacks, as if European explorers did not work with natives...its an ugly picture that folks like you paint...but most Americans are not like you they are like me and like the other Americans on this board. Hopefully you can change your anti Muslim views.

I keep on hearing these stats on the radio in recent days as if Trump is to blame. The media is so clever in distorting the facts for the mindless people. For all of you that didn't know, 2015 was under the Obama administration.

You have blamed crimes on Obama though...which is the same as folks your talking about who might blame Trump for anti Muslim attacks. Mindless people are anti Muslims, anti Jews, and for example anti Christians. It is amazing that in a thread talking about anti Muslim crimes...that Gixxer and AJR are complaining about Muslims/Islam. Just look at this thread and look at how true Americans such as myself represent this country compared to how AJR and Gixxer represent this country.

Its game over for the bigots in America now that Trump has been elected. Get out of this country if you dont like Muslims...go live in North Korea maybe where you can criticize religion all you want. Trump said to those who attack minorities..STOP IT. So gixxer and AJR STOP IT..cut your crap nobody wants to hear the anti Muslim garbage anymore....and no longer are Americans going to sit by idol and let good and peaceful humans get trashed.
