  • Interesting to note that Hillary won the popular vote. Expect that to be a big Democrat talking point in the future, as it will undercut any attempt by the GOP to claim a political mandate.

It also fits a lot of the pre-election polling data.

GOP has won the President and lost the Popular vote 2 of 3 times now.

Trump has won a bloody LANDSLIDE, with a projected 315 College votes to 222, and the popular vote is dead even at the time of posting....nothing "deeply divided" about!

A 3:2 electoral victory and a tie/loss on the popular vote is not a "landslide" by any measurement.

How can he be the one most likely to push the button yet also apparently be a Russian agent? Who is he supposed to push the button against?

The overall popular vote is irrelevant to the outcome. Arizona, Alaska, and Michigan are going to end up being Trump victories. New Hampshire will go to Hillary.

In Arizona the remaining votes outstanding are about 90,000. Trump is ahead by about 80,000. 90% of those uncounted votes are not for Hillary. The same situation is true in Alaska and Michigan.
As with the MSM calling states last night, they were so desperate for a Hillary win they'd call any state she was winning in even by the thinnest margins for her, while holding off calling any Trump was winning, even when it was obvious. Arizona is a perfect example of that. Trump is ahead by about 5% in Arizona and the outstanding votes to be counted will not change that significantly. Michigan and Alaska are the same. Yet, the MSM hopes against hope, that somehow a miracle will happen.

Yes, peace will reign once Putin and Trump finally kiss. The wait has been so long.

How? The polls showed a neck and neck race right before the election, and the results are playing that out pretty accurately. This was not a "Clinton was expected to win by 20%" upset, it was "Clinton is barely favored in the popular vote but it is still statistically a tie" upset. Polls showing Clinton +2 with a 3 or 5 point margin of error were absolutely accurate.

                      • Really? What polls are you looking at?

The Clinton 'camp' sure had very sad faces very early.

I don't think the Trump one would have looked so heartbroken.

Do you really think Clinton thought she might lose? I don't.

                        • I am sure she didn't expect to lose Wisconsin and PA... and maybe Michigan.

She didn't even recently go into Wisconsin did she?

The main states still entering numbers are California, which will take a week and some others. Washington state is only 65% done with Clinton winning a large majority.

Check the ACG polls thread for a recap. I think the only poll that showed Clinton as being favored (as in, her number was greater than the margin of error) was the NBC poll.

Any poll that had Clinton's number as lower than the margin of error (say +2 with a 4 point margin of error) accurately predicted the election by saying "we're 95% confident the election will be within this range." (Using our example, that means anything from Trump +2 to Clinton +6 was covered as a 95% likely outcome).

Clinton's camp believed they were going to win for many reasons, one of which is just hubris. They thought the email bump was gone, when it only helped to narrow the gap further.

And from some reports, she was already drinking heavily before the election, so their confidence may just have been so much political theater hiding their own fears. Anyone who thought this was a sure thing was fooling themselves.

It was an upset for Trump, but not a landslide or statistical anomaly.

Not many people will be congratulating pollsters on their efforts today.
