Well, any liberal griping over Fox News at this point is laughably ironic.

All you have to do is listen to the Left and Right on talk radio to get the gist of how the two sides differ and operate.

(This is generalized so don't pick nits)

The shows on the Left generally encourage opposing views to call in. Some actually only want opposing views called in. They invite a variety of guests on from across the political spectrum. Yes, some of the talk show hosts rant, others don't. But, virtually all want opposing views and invite opposing guests on their shows.

The shows on the Right are for the Right, by the Right and when anything not on the Right is presented it is in the form of ridicule, insult, or dismissal out-of-hand by the talk show host. Opposing callers get the same treatment. If they invite an opposing view on their show, expect the person to get the same treatment.

The Right doesn't want an open and honest debate about anything. When faced with such a proposition they will normally refuse or back out of one. There is to be no fair and honest exchange of ideas when it comes to the Right.
The Left can be pedantic but they'll debate on stuff. They, and you may or may not agree on anything, but at least there was an exchange of positions and ideas. Not so on the Right. It's their way or the highway.

Well, as usual, some got the point and others here have no clue whatsoever what is even being discussed.

HBO and Fox are in the entertainment industry. They succeed when you tune in, regardless of whether you like what you're watching.

I haven't see the Vice reports referenced but Oliver has an overt editorial position. Sometimes I think he is funny and insightful, sometimes brilliant, and sometimes none of the above. But he makes no pretense at being unbiased and is not a journalist. So you are right, it is perfectly fair to compare Faux news with the comedy show Last Week Tonight.

Where Faux fails is they don't have enough laughs except by accident.

As for Hannity, he keeps to "safe places" or punching bags like Colmes in which he can control the interview and shout down the opposition. Compare that with Stewart who would not only have anyone on his show but would go on others shows.

The fatal flaw that "liberals" and the liberally educated suffer from is a pathological need to feel virtuous. I call it pathological narcissistic altruism. We now have women in Europe being raped by "oppressed immigrants" saying it was their fault. Political leaders who excuse violent protests because they are afraid to be called racist. A media that is more interested in being politically correct than reporting the news.

We have a media who lacking the practical experience to deal with issues resort to vacuous philosophy. Social justice, the battle flag of liberalism and the majority of our media, has become so detached from reality that "liberal" philosophy has more in common today with religion than reason and logic.

News casters are now TV evangelists . Traditional evangelists crafted their message to appeal to the "select" group of people who alone will be saved. Often the select were people who felt disenfranchised but somehow superior to the upper class.

Today's liberal media pundit feels similarly disenfranchised but morally superior. They see themselves and other liberals as the select group of individuals who have the knowledge and compassion to lead a nation. Unfortunately they don't have the practical experience to see the unintended consequences of narcissistic altruism.

So few people today are engaged in the practical work that makes survival possible it is little wonder that there is so little focus in the political life of the nation on practical solutions. Every issue is a crisis that demands our undivided attention. There is always a group of academically trained experts who tolerate no scepticism from non experts and who require that we support immediate government intervention. If the experts don't support liberal interventions they soon fall from grace with the media.

Conservatives in this narrowly focused world view are always painted as evolution denying dolts by the media. They have to be dolts or evil because they refuse to recognize the moral superiority of liberals. What liberals fail to understand is that conservation of the mechanics of a civilization underpin progress and it is the role of conservatives to protect us from unrealistic expectations and the impractical. Liberals have little time for the mundane, practical and supposedly unimaginative work of conservatives.

The things that make an intellectual life possible are indeed mundane and dependent on the labor of others. Agriculture, transportation, sanitation etc have become so efficient that few people are needed to work in those areas. We have freed most of the population to labor on the non essential. This process has been going on for ten thousand years. Only recently however, perhaps the last 50 years, has the vast majority of people been freed of manual labor and given the opportunity to pursue higher education. That higher education unfortunately has not replaced the experience needed to focus on the essential, the practical, and ultimately the best solutions.

Socialism and neo conservatism has become the drugs of choice for our intellectual "elites" who have divorced themselves from mundane practicality and are addicted to narcissistic altruism or fascist fantasies. This is especially true of the elitist liberal media and right wing news outlets. There are of course social injustices we must address but the simplistic solutions that do not recognize the limitations of our ability to predict unintended consequences means that we should be careful. We need to be especially careful to listen to a variety of voices and media sources.

  • Well, any liberal griping over Fox News at this point is laughably ironic.

I checked out HBO's latest attempt at news: the daily Vice News show. It was such a joke I spent more time laughing than getting angry.

I will admit, I have a tough time watching millennials news commentators. Every time I try I walk away feeling like maybe all the stuff older people say about my generation was right all along. But I gave them the benefit of one shot to impress me and I can't say they did.

They advertised themselves as "real news" and also mentioned covering global events which would have been fine by me because I would appreciate a specialty show covering the more obscure news elements that don't make it to the prime time feeding frenzy. And they did do that...for about five seconds. After a VERY quick blurb on Apple watch bans in Parliament and student demonstrations in South Africa they went straight into DNC propaganda machine mode.

Now here's the funny thing. When liberals whine about Fox News, they whine about a news network that devotes the evening news time to conservative commentary. Now however much you may dislike seeing a conservative point of view on television, Fox gave you this:

    1. Their biased commentators openly admit to being biased. If you talk to Sean Hannity he will say right up front that he is a GOP guy. He doesn't lie about having an agenda. Bill O. claims to be independent and while he leans conservative he always encourages the viewer to make up their own mind.

    2. They always gave the liberals a chance to climb into the ring and box. All of their prime time programming had oppositional points of view and while there was the occasional shouting match, the left got time to make a counterpoint and many leftists were invited back regularly.

This contrasts rather sharply with Vice News where their commentary consists of a Millennial hipster debating nothing more intimidating than the camera he's staring into. No oppositional viewpoints whatsoever and blatant, practically sneering liberal bias. They did allow Glen Beck some interview time....to bash Trump and talk about how the GOP has fallen. Actual debates: zero.

One more thing makes me chuckle. John Oliver recently did a segment where he mocked the energy industry's transparent attempt to appeal to Millennials with "bros in hoodies". I couldn't help but see the very thing he was making fun of in this program as well.

"Hey! Look at me! I'm young and hip! I've got a beard and I dress trendy, just like you guys! Here, let me throw up some artsy computer animation to show how hip I am. Don't you trust why I have to say now? I'm not old like all those other news guys. And I tell it like it is. Trump is evil, and you should all vote for Hillary!"

Laugh at Fox if you will, but you'll drown in irony if you do given what passes for liberal news these days. These guys make Chris Matthewslook like Walter Cronkite.
