  • Retirement age

The UK looks like it will raise the retirement age substantially. Most GOP candidates in the US favor the same.

    Except for Trump.

Why is Trump against raising the retirement age for those who are now 20 years away from retirement? He's going to be 70 this year and would be 78 if he served two terms as president.

What do you think the retirement age should be?

    And why?

Why should government set one at all? The only reason for a government mandated one, so-to-speak, is because the government has become involved in retirement plans, mucked those up thoroughly and can't pay for what their @$$ promised people.

I think I'm locked in the both employers. The Navy Reserves will force retirement at 60. I can retire from teaching at 65. The combo will give me a comfortable retirement. I knew I'd never be rich. Comfortable works for me! Retiring at 65 gives me time to travel and knock around town!

In the perfect world, all of us should have made enough money that each of us can retire at 40. The official retirement age is for losers such as myself and probably many others here, that really sucked at accumulating wealth and have to rely on a government pension. In fairness, there are many honorable occupations and life choices that did contribute to our lack of wealth status.

Trump is one of those guys that could have retired at 40 if he had really wanted to. I know several people that did exactly that with much less wealth than Trump had at that age - they just chose to live modestly and be frugal where and when needed.

          And why?
          To enjoy life.

Spend time with loved ones and friends. Travel without having to plan restroom breaks and eat foreign food with my real teeth. To make love to my wife in exotic places without viagra or the fear of a heart attack.

I retired at 50. I could go back to work again, but I've got a comfortable lifestyle and have covered my bases. I'm not looking at the government to pay back my money... I'd just rather not get taxed further. They done robbed me enough.

I could have retired at 49. I can pill the pin and leave at any time now. However, I enjoy the job a lot more now that I No longer have a career to protect.

Its not the government's business when people retire.

One extremely negative impact or keeping workers working longer is that unless you are steadily increasing the good of jobs, young people entering the work force will have ever-increasing difficulty finding work.

Retirement is a corporate money making scam - the longer you remain on the job, the more money you cost in salary and benefits. But you will notice that CEO's don't get "retired" early - they hang on until the bitter end.

I intend to keep working as long as I can. I'll take SS at age 70 but keep my job. I really like where I am at this point. Old enough to know better and still young enough not to give a sweet patoot!

Since I work for the State of Illinois, I can retire at age 60 and begin to collect my pension. Since my pension is bankrupt due to the state withdrawing my contributions, retirement at 60 doesn't look like a good idea.

IL's system is the classic example of the Legislature/Gov telling State Employee's that the reason for the mediocre pay is because they would get a very good retirement. So instead of spending more to increase pay they promised to greatly increase the state payments to the pension fund. Then EVERY year money was tight they simply 'deferred' making the payments to the fund, all the while promising to make it up when times were better. They never did.

This is only possible because the State made rules allowing them to fraudulently under fund the public pension system. Criminal.
