Of course you may want to choose the thought police as a reasonable alternative to Trump.

Trump or Drumpf – What’s In A Name?
BY PALASH GHOSH @GOOCH700 ON 04/19/11 AT 12:47 PM
Amidst the national uproar that Donald Trump is creating over where US President Barack Obama was born (Trump said he believes Obama was really born in Kenya, which would make him ineligible to occupy the White House), there are some interesting elements from Trump’s own ancestry.

For one thing, “Trump” is not his real name.

The Donald’s grandfather was a German immigrant named Frederick Drumpf who emigrated to the U.S. in 1885 and became a naturalized citizen in 1892.

At some point, he started calling himself “Frederick Trump,” but it is unclear if he ever changed his name officially. Some have speculated that he didn’t want to be known as “Drumpf” because of prevailing prejudice against Germans (which would heighten, of course, during World War I).

Frederick (or more appropriately, Friedrich) returned to his native Kallstadt in Germany’s Rheinland to marry Elisabeth Christ in 1902.

Drumpf returned to the U.S, and settled in Queens, N.Y. He would die in 1918 during the Spanish Flu epidemic.

Of course, his grandson would attain incredible wealth and global fame under the name “Trump.”

“Trump” is an actual name, it is of English origin and according to linguistic sources it is a “metonymic occupational name for a trumpeter, from Middle English trumpe [‘trumpet’].”

Quite appropriate for someone who likes blowing his own horn.

Start a petition to have him change his name back to Drumpf.. or even better.. Harrumph. In Canada they once had a petition to have the government force a party leader to change his name from Stockwell Day to Doris Day. IIRC they obtained around 1 million signatures..

My wife's family name is Rich with they changed from the German Reich for obvious reasons.

My dads side of the family have ties to the Irish Republican Army.

My mother grew up in a house that spoke German.

Now it would be politically correct to say that they are all Americans and leave it at but I know that heritage does play a part in how you see the world. All of these close family members have world views that in some ways I can trace to their ethnicity.

It is simply silly to say that Obama's ethnic background in no way effects his views on issues or that Trumps family history is irrelevant. It shouldn't be primary consideration but it is worth considering. Ethnicities like people have all sorts of contradictions and warts and to expose them they need to be openly discussed.

            I couldn't care less.

That the media is concerning themselves with what Donald's Grandfather was calling himself in 1892 is irrelevant. Though it should be relevant to note that the article mentions him naturalizing as a citizen.....meaning that there won't be any question of the Donald's lineage.

Friedrich Drumpf made a perfectly sound decision in altering the pronunciation of his name, considering the times and situation he found himself in.

If Donald wants to be called FordLincolnMercury or change his last name to Camacho, it's precisely meaningless.

Perhaps you are right but the important thing is that we can discuss it and Obama's place of birth instead of just assuming that it doesn't matter.

As always, you conveniently forget history as written by BoBo Obama himself, who stated very clearly in his autobiography that he admitted to being born in Kenya when he ran for Congress, because it gave him an advantage. He didn't convert to the Hawaiian lie until he needed to qualify for the presidency.

Are you calling the president himself a liar over where he says he was born?

As for names, a lot of names were altered or changed completely by the numbskulls at Ellis Island in the biggest politically incorrect action in American history because they couldn't and wouldn't properly pronounce the names of the immigrants when they arrived.

And if you want to get irate about name changes, HP, go to Hollywood. You can start with John Wayne, whose real first name was "Marion" and you can move on to Marilyn Monroe, AKA Norma Jean.

Incidentally, Tom Cruise's real name is Mapother...the IVth.

Even the singer named Englebert Humperdink wasn't really named that to begin with, but chose it because it belonged to someone famous in older times.

The only reason Hillary never changed her name was because "Squirrel" was already taken.

Immigrants "Americanize" their names all the time. How is this even an issue?

It wouldn't be but Drumpf called out Jon Stewart for changing his name from Leibowitz awhile ago. Said Stewart should've been proud of his original name. Just another thing The A-Hole is hypocritical about.
