  • Everyone Thinks Canada's New Defense Minister Looks 'Badass'

Canada's new defense minister Harjit Sajjan has been proclaimed by the media a "badass" who single-handedly changed how the Canadian military gathered intelligence in Afghanistan — but before all that, as a teen, he fell in with the wrong crowd.

Struggling to find himself, he turned to his Sikh heritage; the warrior tradition of his people, who have historically been persecuted, resonated with him.

"It wasn't really a religious thing. It was an identity thing," he said in an interview with the Vancouver Sun in 2012. "I loved the warrior aspect of it."

Years later, as a detective on the Vancouver police's gang crime unit, he found himself helping to arrest people he used to know.

Sajjan is one of four ministers of Sikh origin in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet, making the total number of Sikhs in Canada's federal cabinet the highest in the world. India, which is home to most of the world's Sikhs, only has two.

I wonder how Sikhs in general would react to some Op ed suggesting that Sikhs have been historically persecuted. I know some Sikhs, and these are proud people who dont go around complaining about a so called historical persecution.

He also served with US forces in Afghanistan

Another note, Sajjan, on his third deployment became a advisor to US general
      Terry :

" Following Sajjan's second deployment in 2009, U.S. Major-General James Terry, Commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan’s southern provinces, requested that he join the U.S. Command Team for a third deployment 2010, where he served as Special Assistant to General Terry. Pictured below, Sajjan presented General Terry with a Sikh ceremonial kirpan."

What's up with this crazy concept of having a Defence Minister, or Secy of Defence that has real military experience?

There hasn't been a British minister of defence with military experience since Tom King in 1992 and they last one to serve in a conflict was George Younger, his predecessor.

Can't see why they need him. Canada is as close to a neutral, non-involved nation as it is possible to get.

Canada is neither a major world power nor a major world player, especially in the military sense, so they hardly need
a warrior to lead an army of non-fighters with no real world mission to begin with.

You are discounting his deployment in Bosnia and three deployments in Afghanistan, including being credited with being instrumental in the killing or capture of 1,500 Taliban fighters, as non-involvement?

He's probably doesn't know who Furlong is, either.

But you don't understand - Canada, like France, cannot ever be given any military credit, ever! That would ruin the stereotype.

Unfortunately later fired from the police for taking a drunken **** on a colleague (along with other poor behavior).

Quoted for truth. Unfortunately, stereotyping for the sake of chest-thumping creates the inevitable effect of having a boomerang effect by reinforcing the stereotype of Americans. The families of 159 Canadian dead from A-stan can relax easy for their non-involvement and unwarrior-like, non-fighting stance.
