  • Another meaningless gesture by Obama

    Now he's renaming geographic features...

    http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/oba...9D?ocid=SMSDHP

President Obama on Monday will announce a plan to rename Alaska’s Mount McKinley to Denali, the name that nearby natives have long used.

By taking action to officially name the 20,000-foot peak Denali, Obama will take the Alaskan Natives side in a dispute that has stretched on for more than a century.

Most people call it Denali anyway. Even Chevy has a Denali truck.

But doesn't that make you feel so good about yourself?

At least he didn't name it after himself....

This legacy thing gets pretty weird. If Putin liked him no telling what he would negotiate with the Russians.

Well.... He COULD have named it after himself; Mt. Mushmouth. (Ba-da-boom! Rimshot.)

It seems like a perfectly reasonable gesture. I don't see the problem here.

Shhhhh... President Obama did it. That's enough.

Wrong. It is another meaningless gesture. It's no different than here in Phoenix where they renamed Squaw Peak Piewesta Peak after a US Army corporal who was killed in the Iraq invasion.

                  Other than her being:

                  A. Female

                  and

                  B. Native American

She did nothing to distinguish herself in combat. Her support unit blundered into an ambush and she was killed. As callous as that may sound, it is accurate.

But, because of A and B above they renamed a mountain for her.

I have no problem with it other than it is like thinking that removing the confederate flag will make the civil war go away. I'm sure that many Native American's would like all europeans to go away not just the names they stuck on geological features. That is why it is an empty gesture it does nothing to address the practical issue involved in the relationship between the U.S. government and Native interests.

There are also political reason why lame duck presidents should not use the power of the presidency to campaign for their parties views.

Rep. Bob Gibbs, R-Ohio, on President Obama's plan to rename Mt. Mickinley: "President Obama has decided to ignore an act of Congress in unilaterally renaming Mt. McKinley in order to promote his job killing war on energy. This political stunt in insulting to all Ohioans, and I will be working with the House Committee on Natural Resources to determine what can be done to prevent this action"

Obama has been doing enough of this that people are talking about repealing the 22nd Amendment which is pretty significant.

Maybe a LOCAL that died in the war, does how matter? We have highway signs for Men blown up in a Vehicle, nothing more. Should they come down also?

Maybe you should see how the local population feels about it, show us some data....

Or just type up another ODS post.

No, but that's different from renaming a major geographical feature.

Of course, many businesses didn't bother to rename themselves likewise, like the Squaw Peak Hilton Resort for example.

What Government body renamed it? Local. Same story, sorry.

Oh, was Squaw Peak a war hero??? What did she do?

Squaw peak was the traditional name. Piewesta wasn't a "war hero," she was a casualty.
