It happened in Sag Nasty years ago when a bowling ball smashed through a car windshield on I-675. The Perps were caught and charged. Look up bowling ball dropped from overpass. Sag Nasty was not an isolated event. Bricks, concrete blocks, and other heavy objects have been much more common.
    SPEED TRAIN SHOT AT?
FBI looking into fractured AMTRAK window...
Engineer does not recall moments leading up to crash...
    Panicked? Wounded?

Passenger on Same Route Says His Train Also Struck...
So, without notifying any authorities or his dispatcher, the operator more than doubled the legal speed limit on a dangerous stretch of track before a sharp curve to do what, exactly?

Are we actually supposed to believe this totally BS story put out by Amtrak to avoid liability?
Do you know what the proper response to a rock being thrown at the train is? Stop. Call authorities and dispatcher. ABOVE ALL PROTECT THE TRAIN AND THE SAFETY OF THE PASSENGERS. Period. He did none of that.

What next? He saw a UFO?

He...was...speeding. End of story. Time for conviction and prison for multiple counts of negligence, manslaughter and liability for personal injuries - 200+ - and massive destruction of private and personal property.

There is the possibility he was knocked unconscious for a moment by something coming through the windshield and fell into the control thus quickly accelerating the train. Upon coming to, he hit emergency stop but it was too late.

The stubborn facts that remain, the reports of trains being hit by objects that same night.

It is going to be up to the investigators to examine all of the evidence to determine if the train was indeed hit by something that momentarily disabled its engineer, or that the engineer is guilty of gross negligence as everybody is claiming.

My opinion on what happened is this: some local yoots were throwing rocks (or shooting) at train for giggles and being all around morons in general. We know that they managed to hit 2 other trains in that same area (another Amtrak train and a SEPTA train). They manage to hit this Amtrak train, the engineer panics at the sight of rocks/bullets smashing into the window and speeds up the train to try and escape. Train crashes at the curve.

All the liberal Dem politicians screaming about GOP funding cuts for Amtrak would be better off teaching their constituents how to behave and act like adults.

Did he actually speed up or just never slow down?

Escape what? Trains moving through urban areas are regularly hit by various thrown objects.

If they stopped for every rock, they would never get a train through some areas.

I guess some folks want a conspiracy so badly, they ignore common sense. Like you point out, he doesn't say anything about any malfunction. He refuses to talk. He lawyered up immediately. It's just damage control now.

As of this morning's early (0530) television news, the first lawsuit filed against Amtrak for negligence leading to personal injuries is by one of the conductors aboard the crashed train. Apparently he knows more than Amtrak does.
