It's not actually the National Guard, it's the State Guard-the wannabes.

Correct, some pretty funny wannabes that take themselves much to seriously.

I bet the Governor of Texas is too cheap to pay the Texas State Guard for their "deployment".

I remember reading about the Governor of Arkansas calling out the National Guard to prevent the desegregation of Little Rock High. President Eisenhower then called them up for Federal duty and they escorted the Black children into the school.

                            Com'on

My first impulse was much like HPJ, funny, but weird idea.

Then some respected posters seemed to take it seriously.

If I've got this right, the Gov. of Texas called out a nearly non-paid Unit to observe a US Military practice.
Down in the Valley is the Yakima Firing Center. It's a Military Reserve covering hundreds of square miles. Because of its position, Artillery Units can fire the big stuff without dealing with populated centers. However, it also handles Company and Battalion sized maneuvers. Troops from all over the world come to conduct FTX's.
I'm sure the border country of TX is important. But if you control Central Washington State, you control the hydro-electric system of the entire NW.
Ft. Lewis, McCord AFB, Trident submarine base, Fairchild AFB et.al.
The idea that the large movement of troops from the Coast to the Valley would be a precursor to an invasion is nuts!

On my part it was a more generic comment than specific to this thread, but while on the subject - NPR is more often than not a mouthpiece for the Left-Wing-Loonies and the linked article is a classic of distortion by "the Left".

                              Go to a link within the OP link and you'll find this;
                              EXCERPT:
                              ...
Texas and six other states are hosting the exercises on public and private lands. The Army says the terrain and topography in the areas selected are ideal to replicate foreign combat zones.

No other governor had so publicly addressed the training exercise.

"It is important that Texans know their safety, constitutional rights, private property rights and civil liberties will not be infringed," Abbott wrote. "By monitoring the Operation on a continual basis, the State Guard will facilitate communications between my office and the commanders of the Operation to ensure that adequate measures are in place to protect Texans."
                              ...
                              http://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/te...itary-takeover

Since it sounds like this multi-state training exercise is not totally confined to military bases and will be active on other public and private lands, seems prudent to have some "third-party" oversight, especially should there be any events or damage that could result in litigations and/or claims(court) charged against DoD.

But then some will grasp any straw to try and slam the political Right
