    Nothing new. If it wasn't politics it was "the church." Galileo is a good example. Ptolemy is another.

    I agree that personal belief over facts causes science to lose. That is particularly true when you move Left.

    Aryan physics (Nazi physics) is an example:

    Marxist science is another:

    Leftist environmentalism is no different

    Sure, there are crazies on the Right too. But, creationism and other religion based "science" is definitely in the minority when it comes to adherents. On the other hand, the Left's pseudo-science usually goes mainstream with disastrous consequences.

        I hate to say it, but your views here say more about your own prejudices than any objective reality.

          Politics will always play a part in science because scientists are people.

          Scientists rarely discard facts and hard science... However, there has always been and always will be a tendency to interpret the facts and the science in a manner consistent with the current ruling theory/paradigm. This is also human nature.

            Honestly, you're right. However, since environmental issues are almost solely mentioned on the forum in the context of politics, I thought it best to mention here - fodder for a more informed debate, perhaps.

            What can I say, I'm an optimist, and I think people can rise to higher standards of dialogue if they try... even on the internet.

              I think that's one of the crucial elements in the environmentalism debate. It's not just a case of a bunch of people disregarding everything and making up their own numbers but more to do with a very selective interpretation of raw data. If you go in looking for proof that mankind is heating up the world, well, one can interpret the numbers quite favorably.

                        Science --> Scientist
                        Geology --> Geologist
                        Biology --> Biologist
                        Physics --> Physicist
                        Chemistry --> Chemist

                        Environmentalism --> Environmentalist

                        Empiricism, like Environmentalism and Creationism, is an anthropocentric philosophy... As are Marxism, Socialism and Capitalism.

                        Empiricism and empirical are two totally different and only tangentially related words. I could not perform my job if I was an empiricist...
                        Empricism, in philosophy, the view that all concepts originate in experience, that all concepts are about or applicable to things that can be experienced, or that all rationally acceptable beliefs or propositions are justifiable or knowable only through experience. This broad definition accords with the derivation of the term empiricism from the ancient Greek word empeiria, “experience.”

                                Well just because it's cold in Sag Nasty (is that a real place ?) doesn't mean it isn't warming someplace else,

                                it's called "Global" warming after all, you're looking for averages.

                                But a heartfelt **** you too, by all means

                                Edit:
