6 more bodies in Mexican border pits; total at 183

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Security forces have unearthed six more bodies in a northeastern Mexican border state where a drug gang is believed to be kidnapping passengers from buses and hiding their victims in secret graves, authorities said Tuesday. A total of 183 bodies have been discovered in a month in 40 graves.

The horrific discoveries have intensified criticism that lawlessness reigns in Tamaulipas state, where the Zetas drug gang has terrorized migrants trying to make their way north to the United States. It is the same region where authorities say the Zetas killed 72 Central American migrants in August.

Meanwhile, a similar search over the past week in the town of Las Fuentes in northwestern Durango state has uncovered 75 bodies as of Tuesday, said Gerardo Ortiz, a spokesman for the Durango state attorney general's office.

Ortiz said the bodies appear to have been buried for anywhere from six months to six years, but authorities don't know for sure because they haven't done tests.

He wouldn't say who the victims likely were. But unlike in Tamaulipas, where states across Mexico sent reports of missing persons and families lined at up morgues to give DNA samples, no one has been calling Durango. Very few families have inquired about loved ones, Ortiz said.

He said perhaps families were afraid to come forward, but he didn't want to speculate.

Yes, but don't you find it noble that these Mexicans are sacrificing their lives to bring us the narcotics that we crave?

There is a symbiotic relationship here. If they didn't grow it, no one could use it. If people (I will not say "we" here) didn't use it, they wouldn't grow it.

It's a death spiral for both sides.

Well said. That was my point. We (as a nation) tend to villainize Mexico because of these drug wars, while conveniently ignoring the fact that we are a driving force behind this due to our collective desire to snort cocaine.

OTOH I'm rather heartened by the continued willingness of so many Mexicans to defend their sovereignty against an almost unlimited amount of drug money and the utter ruthlessness of the gangs they face.
Any metaphor will tear if stretched over too much reality.

I think they need to make gun ownership easier in Mexico. In Guatemala gun ownership is easy. Hence gangs are now being checked by armed citizens that are actually cleaning up areas where the police and army won't. This needs to happen in Mexico. Sorry to say, but there is a place for vigilantism. Restrictive gun laws only keep the good guys from getting guns.

That and eradicate the corruption within... which has yet to be done.

This is the same ole story with a modern twist of inept govt-crime-exploitation and social stagnation for 500 years.

They haven't got the willingness or evident moral courage to not not be led by criminals. Conquistadors-Hildagos-Warlords-RCC and now drug scum.

              Nothing new here.

We should have kept it after 48.
