Icelandís Prime Minister Resigns After Panama Papers Leaks

Eleven million documents were leaked from one of the world's most secretive companies, Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca.
They show how Mossack Fonseca has helped clients launder money, dodge sanctions and evade tax.
The company says it has operated beyond reproach for 40 years and has never been charged with criminal wrong-doing.
The documents show links to 72 current or former heads of state in the data, including dictators accused of looting their own countries.
Gerard Ryle, director of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), said the documents covered the day-to-day business at Mossack Fonseca over the past 40 years.
"I think the leak will prove to be probably the biggest blow the offshore world has ever taken because of the extent of the documents," he said.
Panama Papers - tax havens of the rich and powerful exposed

      • Eleven million documents held by the Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca have been passed to German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung, which then shared them with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. BBC Panorama is among 107 media organisations - including UK newspaper the Guardian - in 78 countries which have been analysing the documents. The BBC doesn't know the identity of the source

The data contains secret offshore companies linked to the families and associates of Egypt's former president Hosni Mubarak, Libya's former leader Muammar Gaddafi and Syria's president Bashar al-Assad.
      Russian connection

It also reveals a suspected billion-dollar money laundering ring that was run by a Russian bank and involved close associates of President Putin.
The operation was run by Bank Rossiya, which is subject to US and EU sanctions following Russia's annexation of Crimea.
The documents reveal for the first time how the bank operates.

Well, Iceland is looking for a new prime minister. According to CNN, while the Icelanders they talked to realized that what the PM did was likely not illegal, they considered what he did unethical.

LONDON/REYKJAVIK, April 5 (Reuters) - Icelandís Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson is to step down after leaked documents from a Panamanian law firm showed his wife owned an offshore company with big claims on collapsed Icelandic banks, his party said.

Gunnlaugsson became the first prominent casualty from the revelations in the so-called Panama Papers, which have cast light on the financial arrangements of an array of politicians and public figures across the globe and the companies and financial institutions they use.

Well it must be uncomfortable being a Mossack Fonseca partner now. I would think that the business is finished given that they made their money by protecting the secrets of their clients. And they will have seriously pissed off some very powerful and very scary people with no scruples whatsoever who will want to be sure that whatever secrets remain - remain secret - to the grave.

Here is another list of people/organizations involved. A good study reveals that politically, they're all across the spectrum.

What I don't understand is the rage that people supposedly have against such "investors", when they already knew that large sport franchises do the same thing yet escape scrutiny. I guess being a celebrity and part of entertaining sport gets you a free pass.

There is only one wrong thing in the whole story= the impunity with which the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (including of course the anti semites of the BBC and the Guardian) have violated the privacy of thousands of people :to have money in Panama is legal and people are doing with their own money what they like .

The result of this scandal should be that the members of this criminal International Consortium of Investigative Journalists should be put in prison .

The privacy of the account holders is protected by the law of Panama and journalists have NO right to violate this privacy by stealing this information and publishing it worldwide .

What happens is a very dangerous precedent : today Panama, tomorrow Rouen .What would be the reaction from Sebfrench if tomorrow a French newspaper would publish all his financial transactions ?

It is time, more than time for an international reaction against this arbitrariness from a gang of irresponsible and arrogant journalists, who think that they are above the law .
