There is a chance they will win enough seats to pass constitutional changes that the president cannot veto. If they do they are expected to limit his powers.

Not enough it turns out. Opposition won 99 seats out of 167, 22 undecided when this went to press. Socialists won 46. Good news for Venezuela. I expect Maduro will work to undermine the power of the legislature while continuing the Chavista tactic of using fair means & foul to pressure the various fracture points among the opposition parties.

Unfortunately the Presidential elections aren't for 4 years. Plenty of time to continue messing up the country.

    Looking for what, smugglers?

USCG planes don't pack the sort of gear that dedicated USAF reconnaissance or surveillance aircraft carry. Not to mention that most such work is now done by drones.

Venezuela arrests three for killing of opposition candidate

    And the plot thickens.

The Prosecutor General's Office named three men, aged between 22 and 28, whom it said were arrested on Monday morning in the town of Altagracia de Orituco where Diaz was killed at a rally.

  • Outrage after Venezuela opposition leader killed

We take peaceful elections as a given in the US. In many places that's not a safe bet.

Opposition leader Luis Diaz was shot Wednesday night at a rally in central Guarico state. His party, Democratic Action, is part of an opposition coalition that is mounting the strongest challenge in 16 years to the socialist government amid worsening economic problems in this oil-producing country.
