  • Many Uruguayans fed up with complaints from Syrian refugees

JUAN LACAZE, Uruguay (AP) — When Uruguay announced last year that it would be taking in five families fleeing Syria's devastating civil war, residents of this small town pulled together and lobbied to host one.

Then in November, locals welcomed a newly arrived Merhi Alshebli, his wife and their 15 children with food and seeds to plant vegetables. People in Juan Lacaze, a coastal city of fishermen and paper factory workers in southwestern Uruguay, wanted to do their part to help a country where more than 200,000 have been killed in the fighting.

But after months of the Syrians' complaints about their living conditions and demands to be sent to another country, many Uruguayans in this town and elsewhere have come to see the refugees more as rude, ungrateful guests. This month the 51-year-old Alshebli shocked locals by dousing himself in gasoline in protest, furthering Uruguayans' indignation and sense that this South American nation's humanitarian gesture has gone off the rails.

Several of the kids in this family should be out and on their own. If you keep 21 year old sons and 19 year old daughters in the house, you are not going to be able to feed them all.

The next time this guy whines they should offer to fly him back to Syria.

Amen, 15 kids this is the mentality that is being dealt with.

Some white people here in the USA whine and complain about the most basic of issues.

Your going to find whiners and regular people all over the world. Not all humans are bad people.

I wonder how much money they were getting for doing little except making babies in Syria...

19 kids. Good grief, I'd reject them just on that basis.

They ran up a bill for $475 for electricity in two months during winter? Do they have an electric furnace? I have seen the electric bill here for the Summer. Picture teenage boys running in and out all day with the air conditioner on! Since the daughter and son-in-law work, they aren't here to tell them to stay in or stay out. I stay in my room most of the time and I can't keep them and their friends either in or out. It is better now that only one set of friends is doing this! One boy has moved out and another spends most of his time with his friends.

The moral is you can't keep running up the electric bill without making adjustments. For several years I was on a plan where the electric company charged me an average monthly bill. It sucked paying that much in January and February, but it was a life saver in July and August!

You guys should have seen my electric bill when Hurricane Rita shut off the electricity for three weeks! They decided to average the bill for what I would have used if I was getting electricity. I tried calling them up and asking them to come and check my meter, but they didn't. A call to the State Public Service Board in charge got them to send out a meter reader eight weeks after Rita hit! They still made me pay....

US personnel distribute many thousands of "humanitarian rations," or HUMRATS, to to people in emergent conditions every year. People in need as a result of natural disaster or man-made crisis are often met by US forces, and provided with basic medical attention, blankets, and these HUMRATS. The HUMRATS are similar to US military MREs, except that their packaging is brightly colored, stamped with Old Glory, and they're vegan, so as not to offend any of the myriad of dietary sensibilities encountered in widely disparate places and cultures. Anyways, after a powerful earthquake struck northern Pakistan, one refugee noted how the HUMRATS sucked 'cause they lacked lamb.

In the opening of his biography of Lavrenty Pavlovich Beria, Thaddeus Wittlin related how a young Beria came upon a beggar in his native Georgia who usually cursed those who gave to him, how that incident proved the old Russian saw: "why do you hate me so? I never did anything good for you." Suffice to say, it more than applies to the Middle East.
