Cuban President Raul Castro 'willing to talk to US'

Cuban President Raul Castro has made a seemingly impromptu address at a Revolution Day ceremony and said he is willing to hold talks with the US.

Mr Castro, who had not spoken at the event for the past two years, grabbed the microphone to address the crowd in the eastern province of Guantanamo.

He said he would hold talks with the US, as long as it was "a conversation between equals".

The two countries have not had diplomatic relations for five decades.

President Castro said the offer had already been made through diplomatic channels and that no topic was off limits.

"Any day they want, the table is set," Mr Castro said.

He said he was prepared to discuss "the problems of democracy, human rights etc. But on equal terms because we are no-one's colony".

Cuba would remain independent and free, he said, and nothing like the uprisings in Libya or Syria, backed by foreign forces, would happen in the country.

If the US wanted confrontation, he quipped, then it should be in baseball or some other sport.

"Preferably baseball when sometimes they win, sometimes we do," he said.

He doesn't need the US to take steps on the "Problems of Democracy and Human Rights".

I have no issue with talking to Cuba, but Cuba's problems are their own and they can address them with or without talking to us.

This could have happened 50 years ago and up to a point it was. Then came Dallas and it was no more...

I doubt the Commies will be going anywhere anytime soon. They will always be around.

It's sort of like Puerto Rico and the pro-commonwealth Partido Popular Democratico. No matter how many votes the statehooders get they always seem to come bouncing back.

Why? Do you lie awake at night fearing the dreaded Cuban Communist Invasion?

Yes, the land they seized from US citizens & corporations in 1962 I believe it was. They are also sheltering criminals and terrorists like Assata Shakur.

Ernest Hemingway for instance lost his vacation home and library with over 10,000 books.

There are somethings in history you just need to move on from. When Castro is gone , it's time to move on, it should of moved on years ago. I don't think he'd be there if the embargo had been dropped. Lets be blunt much of the US corporations in Cuba in the late 50's were connected to or fronts for the mob...

Apparently Cuba may be talking to Russia:

                            I don't see that happening.

Copenhagen, could we please have a reliable cite for that information. It would also help if you could furnish a sourse which identifies exactly which U.S. Corporations were connected to or fronts for the mob.

My understanding is that the mob presence was rather small, and primarily connected with casinos in HAVAn. As for Cuba being the "Bordel of the Caribbean", a chapter in the "Manual of the Perfect Latinamerican Idiot" alleges that the great majority of brothels in Cuba were in fact Cuban owned, and in the majority, catered to a Cuban clientel.
