The Great Cathedral of East / Hagia Sophia to be converted in to mosque.

Explained: Why Turkey wants to convert Hagia Sophia into a mosque

The construction of this iconic structure in Istanbul started in 532 AD during the reign of Justinian I, the ruler of the Byzantine Empire, when the city was known as Constantinople.

The 1,500-year-old structure, listed as a Unesco World Heritage site, was originally a cathedral before it was turned into a mosque. In the 1930s, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, shut down the mosque and turned it into a museum in an attempt to make the country more secular.

There have been calls for long from Islamist groups and nationalists in the country to convert the Hagia Sophia back into a mosque.

Last year, just days ahead of the local elections, Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had said it had been a “very big mistake” to turn the Hagia Sophia into a museum and that he was considering reverting it.

Why is Greece objecting to the conversion of Hagia Sophia?

The controversy surrounding the Hagia Sophia comes at a time when there have been diplomatic tensions between Turkey and Greece over other issues. In May this year, Greece objected to the reading of passages from the Quran inside the Hagia Sophia on the 567th anniversary of the Ottoman invasion of the former Byzantine capital, another instance of disagreement between the two countries regarding the conversion of the Hagia Sophia.

Greece’s Foreign Ministry had issued a statement saying this move was a violation of UNESCO’s ‘Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage’. Greece had said the Hagia Sophia had “been designated a museum of world cultural heritage and is currently being used to promote other purposes”. Turkey responded by saying that Greece’s objections to the reading of passages from the Quran were indicative of its “intolerant psychology”.

Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has signed a decree converting Hagia Sophia in Istanbul - founded as a cathedral - into a mosque.

Earlier Turkey's top administrative court annulled the museum status of the world-famous cultural site.

The head of the Eastern Orthodox Church has condemned the proposal, as has Greece - home to many millions of Orthodox followers.

"The nationalism displayed by President Erdogan... takes his country back six centuries," Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said in a statement.

The court ruling "absolutely confirms that there is no independent justice" in Turkey, she added

Yeah, what interest was the Crown advancing back then?

Anyways, Hagia Sofia had been a mosque since the fall in 1453 until Ataturk established the modern Turkish Republic in the 1920s. This may not be so much as an attack upon Orthodox Christians -- who've suffered plenty under the modern Turkish Republic -- but a repudiation of Ataturk's secularism. Maybe Turkish men will go back to wearing fezes, too.

It was only introduced in 1826, and it's Ottoman and cosmopolitic. Erdogan might not like the Atatürk legacy for its secularism, but he has no problem with the rampant nationalism.

I sometimes wonder what would have happened if the Greek army had been less incompetent back in the 1920s

Interesting observation but Trump has never acted as if only one religion was to be observed in the U.S.

Trump's brand of nationalism is to make the U.S. great not at the expense of a multiethnic framework but within that framework. That is true only if you don't agree the enlightenment is limited to Europeans. The West having shared science with the world certainly speaks to the universal application of enlightenment philosophy. The philosophy central to the U.S. constitutional foundation.

Most things Said about Trump are gross oversimplifications.

Turkey is a secular state. Trump totes the Bible around more than Erdogan does the Quran. Non Muslims can visit the Hagia Sofia which was a Mosque for 500 years.

Plus this move by Erdogan might be reversed after he is out of office or dead..as Ataturk was the one Who turned the mosque into a museum. The next Turkish Prime minister might turn it back to a museum.

                    Hopefully,

                    If secularism comes back.

Turkey has no reason to discard secular policies.

Till now it was a happy secular, cosmopolitan state.

Only problem is the fear, that they may become out and out Orthodox Islamic state.

They should not Ape Iran , Saudis or Pakistani's.

Pope Francis has said he's "pained" by Turkey's decision to convert Istanbul's Hagia Sophia back into a mosque.

Would the Prophet Muhammad Convert Hagia Sophia?

                        And a welcome one.

Turkey’s decision to change the former cathedral into a mosque flies against the pluralist instincts of Islam’s founders.

                        • The recent decision by the Turkish government to reconvert the majestic Hagia Sophia, which was once the world’s greatest cathedral, from a museum back to a mosque has been bad news for Christians around the world. They include Pope Francis, who said he was “pained” by the move, and the spiritual leader of Eastern Christianity, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who said he was “saddened and shaken.” When contrasted with the joy of Turkey’s conservative Muslims, all this may seem like a new episode in an old story: Islam vs. Christianity.

But some Muslims, including myself, are not fully comfortable with this historic step, and for a good reason: forced conversion of shrines, which has occurred too many times in human history in all directions, can be questioned even from a purely Islamic point of view........
