  • UK offer refuge to Hongkongers

Currently, Hongkongers are only allowed to stay in the UK for 6 months increments and aren't permitted to find employment. Boris Johnson will grant HK passport holders born before 1997 British residency and working rights, if China implements its new security laws. There are approximately 3 million Hongkongers who hold the old passports.

How will this be received in the UK, should Boris Johnson follow through on it?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I think it's an absolutely spiffing idea. What a splendid chap he is our Sir Winston Boris.

Hath passed the light of noble deeds

In addition, could place them on a route to citizenship. But it only applies to passports holders holdover from British rule.

The crackdown supposedly violates the Sino-British Joint Declaration in which China agreed to preserve Hong Kong’s political freedoms and way of life until 2047.

Much rather have them as British citizens than the hordes vandalising memorials and attacking police in central London over the last couple of days.

Hey, you know what? How about Britain uses the Russian method of granting visas like in the South Ossetia, Crimea, etc incidents?

The problem with the Russian method is that when the PRC eventually marches into HK and kills a few hundred now-UK citizens, it can no longer be ignored.

It'll have to be. There's nothing the UK can do. They no longer do "East of Suez".
