Throughout this there has been significant differences of opinion between Imperial uni and Oxford uni. Imperial have been the driving force behind the lockdown so far and have always pushed for ever more stringent restrictions. Ferguson (who is a physicist) the one who was fired for getting his legover with is mistress had led the imperial team. Oxford uni's epidemiology team, led by an epidemiologist, has always been less committed to the full lock down on the grounds that the virus is going anyway so why wreck your economy for nothing.

Looks like Oxford uni are backing up their medical scientists opinions in that they are promising to teach face to face next term. In contrast Cambridge will just be an online university next year.

Further positive news. People who had the original Sars virus back in 2003 have a level of immunity against Covid. I wonder if that could be why Covid was dealt with so quickly in Asia?

Secondly and more importantly for us in the West who probably weren't exposed to Sars1, 50% of the sample who had had no exposure to Sars1 or Covid also had a level of immunity against Covid. The later is a small sample size but a further indicator that many more people are likely to be resistant to Covid than test positive to an anti body test. And again could explain the continuing decline in the virus.

        • England appears to have the highest death rate per capita in the world at the moment.

WELL DONE BORIS on making Britain Number One.

What about the UK as a whole? I suppose that by saying "England" you exclude the rest?

I saw some data yesterday according to which, in Europe, Belgium and Spain still have a higher death rate than the UK (though things might be worse in England alone). Spain seems just above the UK in terms of deaths per million population, Belgium far worse. Italy, France, Sweden and Germany were below the UK.

Until everyone is using the same methodology for counting then the numbers are meaningless.

And even if they were comparable, every country faces a different situation, different population density, different levels of connectivity, different demographics etc. etc.

However I believe that the government is going too slowly in opening up the country and that this will lead to a deeper and longer than necessary recession. . It is strange but on a range of issues the government is behaving as if it were still a minority government and not one with an 80 seat majority in its first year of office.

                • There's a positive to be taken away in all this. Sir Winston Boris is as honest as the day is long, which scuppers the old rumour, he's a racist, slimy, two-faced, idle back-stabbing liar.
To go on tele and take full responsibility for this wholesale slaughter is most Churchillian...
So, three cheers for Sir Winston Boris...

A Bristol university study indicates that the virus was in retreat even before lock down was implemented in the UK.
