Shock horror politician accused of lying. A District Judge has ruled that there is sufficient evidence for Boris Johnson to face trial on a charge of Misconduct in a Public Office

Boris Johnson has been ordered to appear in court over claims he lied by saying the UK gave the EU £350m a week.

The Tory leadership candidate has been accused of misconduct in public office after making the claim during the 2016 EU referendum campaign.

It is a private prosecution launched by campaigner Marcus Ball, who crowdfunded £200,000 for the case.
Although the Crown Prosecution Service can shut down a private prosecution the judge's decision makes this highly unlikely. The jury selection should be an interesting process - finding twelve good men/women entirely neutral or unaware of Bexit.
Also raises an interesting conundrum for the Tories. If they do elect Boris leader and he becomes PM and is then found guilty he would almost certainly have to resign and they'd have to go through the whole thing again

Anyone calling Boris a liar better have loud voice to be noticed above the many other laying the same charge. Boris is a liar. He admits he lied. He lies all the time. Ask his wife. Ask his many girl-friends. Ask his friends. It would be a shock if you found someone who did not say he was a liar.

A politician who's economical with the truth...
        whatever next?

        And athwart the seas
Hath passed the light of noble deeds
        Unquenchable forever.

There is a difference between lying by omission and by commission

Most politicians, horse traders ,estate agents and used car dealers are skilled in the former. It's the difference between forgetting to mention that the neighbours are a heavy metal group who like to party on the back lawn deep into the night and telling the buyer that the extension out the back had passed building regs when it hadn't.

Funnily enough the man behind this case, ostensibly 'to stop lying in politics', is a liar himself "Campaigner To 'Stop Lying In Politics' Lying About His Political Campaign"
              https://order-order.com/2019/05/29/c...ical-campaign/

Also from Guido "Guido looks forward to a similar prosecution being brought against Remain’s £4,300 per household claim, Alistair Campbell’s dodgy dossier, George Osborne’s emergency budget, every time the Labour Party claimed there were just hours left to save the NHS, every Tory ‘Tax Bombshell’ calculation, and Corbyn’s pledge to ‘deal with’ student debt. At least the famous £350 million is backed up in Table 9.9 of the ONS Pink Book, revealing total debits from the UK to the EU amounted to 19.1bn, or slightly more than £350 million a week…"

There is nothing wrong for a politician not to say the truth, which is not the same as lying .
The whole thing is only an attempt to prevent Johnson from becoming PM and to have a Cameronite as PM .

Maybe my dad did but what exactly has this got to do with the fact Boris Johnson is a lying cheat who will say or promise anything to be the Prime Minister?
For example would Ted Bundy be let go free because he could show Gary Ridgeway was worse than him?

Comparing it to Mueller is insane.

Maybe this is one of those vagaries of British law, but if Boris Johnson was not testifying under oath, then how is "lieing" a crime? Don't all politicians lie on the stump? Don't they all omit, exaggerate, embellish, or diminish? Therefore, aren't all politicians liars?

What is misconduct in public office?

                              • It's an ancient offence with roots back to the 13th Century
                              • It can only be brought against someone who is exercising some kind of official function - such as a civil servant, a prison officer or someone else entrusted to carry out a public role
                              • Someone is guilty of the offence if a prosecution can prove that the official wilfully neglected to perform their duty - or "misconducts" themselves - to such a degree that it amounts to an abuse of the public's trust in the office holder
                              • The offence can lead to life imprisonment
