  • Radovan Karadzic given life sentence

About f-ing time. Previously convicted and sentenced to 40 years, Karadzic lost his appeal and saw his sentence increase to a life sentence. He can continue playing chess with prison-mate Ratko Mladic.

Now I'd like for the UN to be held responsible for their inaction, allowing for the mass murders to take place. Having been a former "blue-helmet" in that conflict (and losing my then-girlfriend to sniper fire) I was near Sarajevo when the Srebrenica massacre to place. At the time we knew something bad was happening, but it wasn't until about 4-5 days later we began to realize the scale of it all. The UN bears great responsibility in this and other mass murders of that conflict.

Given that he is in his seventies what's the difference between a 40 year sentence and life?

Serbs were made the scapegoats of this war. Sadly the others weren't punished for their actions like Croatian leaders and their American supervisors.

It may have been symbolic, but by giving the life sentence it effectively shuts the door on any more future appeals. In other words, the courts didn't want Karadzic thinking he could waste their time anymore.

Not in the least bit. Yes, Croats committed atrocities too, against Bosniacs and Serbs...but the Serbs dirtied their hands all by themselves without anyone's else's help. Scapegoats, my arse...I saw first hand the results of their war on civilians.

They fought for Yugoslavia. It wasn't them who started all this mess and conducted anti-Serbian policies.

When Croatia declared independence, the Serbs should have seen the writing on the wall and let them go. But no, they could not leave alone could they. The Serbs actually conducted the first atrocity at Ovcara. Yugoslavia was an anachronism and had to go....and did. Serbs also reintroduced the concentration camps.

Personally, I don't know why the US even got involved. This was Europe's problem at most and Europe should have solved it on their own.

Why let go what's yours ? Croatian lived on a part of historical Serbian lands and they killed dozens of thousands of Serbs in WWII. Serbs fought for their country and for their people.

Btw Interesting how the position of NATO changed when it came to South Ossetia/Abkhazia and Crimea/Donbass...

Classic "Whataboutism". Serbs...more than any warring party, engaged in the worst cases of ethnic cleansing and genocide not seen since the Nazis. They became what they claim to detest.

Bring it up with NATO. The running joke during the war was that Karadzic would discover a Serb couple living in Iceland, thus demanding the return of Iceland to Greater Serbia.

The best and only thing to do was to bomb the Serbs in the former Yugoslavia it ended the bloodshed when NATO finally bombed them in 95 and 99 and they’ll get it again if they ever try to take more land and commit genocides on their neighbors again.

No whatboutism. You seem to completely don't understand how such wars are waged. One side destroys the other or is destroyed. So simple as that. Serbs were fighting for their country against the hated enemy.

Yugoslavia is Serbian lands. So they were fighting for what is theirs.

Sheer nonsense and lies. I watched two mass graves of mostly old men and young boys being pulled out of the muck, thanks to the Serbs. The only time the Serbs could actually take land was when they were killing unarmed civilians. The Serbs led by criminally insane men like Karadzic, Mladic, Arkan and etc. were leading a genocidal campaign against innocents for a land grab...they weren't defending anything at all. No amount of revisionism and denial on your part erases the heinous crimes they committed, and now the Serbs today must live on with that legacy brought onto them by murderers.

Given my still vivid memories of Mostar and Sarajevo, the Serbs, and to a lesser extent the Croats got off very lightly, IMO.
