Remind me how that turned out........

Remind you? OK, the Republic of Ireland has done alright considering - helped by its great friendly neighbour. Greece is still in an awful condition. A 30% decline in its GDP, its national debt still at about 180% though its unemployment rate has fallen to only 18% or so.

A real stupid decision of Greece not to leave the Eurozone. The other Med. countries are bad though not as bad.
Did you want to spin a success story here?

67% vs 52%. Do you really wonder why joining the EU went a lot smoother than getting out of it?
The 1975 referendum on the EEC was two years after the UK joined.

      The question asked was:
The Government has announced the results of the renegotiation of the United Kingdom's terms of membership of the European Community.

Do you think that the United Kingdom should stay in the European Community (the Common Market)?

Probably if Dave Cameron had been as successful in his attempts to renegotiate with the EU as Harold Wilson was with the EEC the British would have opted to stay in.

The 2016 referendum was thevwill of the people. At the 2017 election both major parties promised to leave the EU.
The will of the people is to leave.
MPs in the form of most but not all of the Labour Party and about a third of the parilimentaty Tory party including TM have since then been trying to stop the UK leaving and are acting against the expressed wish of the people..

It is quite probable that there will be another election this year. Depends on whether May is dragged out of number 10.

But not what leave mean as kind of exit. Hence the current situation. Btw Labour is close to support a second (third) referendum.

In 2016. On one particular afternoon in March whenever it was.

Maybe the "will of the people" was something else the very next day, or even later that afternoon.

Who's to say what the "will" of the people" is today, or tomorrow, even so why would the "will" of the 51% would be more important than the "will" of the 49%.

That's why nation states are not normally governed by referendum.

Translation : Snowygerry means that the voters are stupid and that the country must be ruled by their betters = the politicians
: Snowygerry means that a minority of 49 % has the right to impose its will on the majority of 51 % . :Snowygerry means that referenda can only be held if the outcome is known the day before = the voters approving what Deep State has decided .
Curious democracy, this Snowygerry democracy can be described as a totalitarian democracy .

Not "voters" as such - just you.

Note that I'm in good company in that regard.

Who was it again that said that the best argument against democracy is a five minute chat with Ljadw

I'd rather Swiss democracy came to us!

Ever greater democracy strikes me as a lot better than 'ever closer union'.

Collapse was predicted and collapse did not happen. You are like Jehovah's Witnesses who originally said the world was going to end in 1914. When it didn't then it was changed to 'the world will end in the lifetime of a person born in 1914'. When that did not happened the prediction changed again but you will have to Google it for yourself. Point is some people will say or do anything to keep up the delusion their 'dream' will happen.

You will never get through. The loonies were totally fixated on getting the most extreme form of separation and trampling over all opposition. They really believe the UK is Camelot and they tried to bully everyone into enacting their crazy beliefs. Trouble is its all gone tits -up for them and they know they have been outplayed. They are frantically struggling to keep bits of their dream alive but they are yesterdays men. Rees-Mogg led them to a defeat that rivals The Little Big Horn.

That does seem to be the case, like in this dream of 'ever closer union'. Who will be the banner bearers for the EU dream when Merkyll finally retires (and about a decade too late), when Junckers, Barnier and all those other fossils have passed on?
Oedipus Rex there in France? Can barely get the support of a quarter of his own population, Rutte from the Netherlands - he is even less popular. Those popular guys in Italy - oh, no they want to change the EU and Germany has already put the big Nein! on full fiscal union.

The UK makeup of the EU Parliament will be interesting, as indeed, will the politcal make-up of all the EU Parliament after the May elections!
