No one on the other side of the Channel wants a no-deal Brexit. There's no upside to one. As far as the EU is concerned the deal HAS already been negotiated. Only for the UK to pass it into law.

If the UK does not, well, then we all will just have to see.

Though if the UK asks for an extension it can probably get one, if the alternative is a no-deal Brexit.

Meh, they said the same about the Lisbon Treaty and probably the Maastricht Treaty before that then when it rejected by referendum in some country or other the EU was only too willing to change the text to get a positive referendum result. Only with the WA are they playing hardball.

        • Probably the best thing for the UK to do now is sign the Withdrawal Agreement and then, when a few years down the line the UK has a proper Prime Minister with balls and the EU has arrogantly overstepped the mark, we just unilaterally rip the Agreement up and walk away.

That's why Ireland wanted the backstop; the British have lots of form when it comes to breaking agreements.

Well, it WAS the British PM representing the British government.

What do you suggest? The EU unilaterally declare the British PM and the British government doesn't represent Britain? Who does? Rees-Mogg?

Well, we can always negotiate the UK's future relationship with the EU on the basis of such an assumption. I.e. that the UK is only negotiating in bad faith. It's New Russia...

A minority government though, there lies much of the problem.

May, though mandated to negotiate, is not supported by a majority in parliament that can ratify whatever she negotiates.

What? The point was that the EU in earlier negotiations was flexible enough to rewrite passages of a treaty to get it agreed to. With the Withdrawal Agreement they are not. What do they expect a second referendum?

The EU has concluded its negotiations.

And as regards Russia, Germany just agreed to buy as much of their gas as they can via Nord Stream 2 and a big up yours to the rest of the EU and NATO

                      • Well if May (or anyone else for that matter) had a majority, there would have been no need rewrite anything.

I suspect they expected her to find a majority to support her somehow.

You mean a third referendum, right?
The first one was in 1975. The second one was in 2016. Why not have a decider?

It looks like their political system has fractured along tribal lines...

A new referendum would make matters worse imho.

Domestically I mean, Brits seem rather emotional and bitter about the whole affair, asking them to vote again...… Well idk, I saw an elderly lady in all honesty predicting violence if Brexit should not happen..

For the EU presumably it doesn't make much of a difference, they're either in or out, if it's after the first referendum or the 11th.
