The UKís bid to fast-track its post-Brexit entry to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) failed today, after other countries expressed misgivings over Britainís approach to tariffs.
More meanies wanting to annex Ireland or whatever.

        • The irony of Brexit is that it is in essence a move by very rich English people to push towards a far more extreme form of globalisation but it is dressed up in phony populism as a move to consolidate and strengthen UK unity and self determination.
It will certainly weaken the rights of UK citizens as it will weaken the laws which have come from the EU which protect the rights of individuals. That umbilical between an EU and the people of the UK which has consistently sought to limit the power of the State and of businesses over the citizen will be severed. It's back to the times when Britain was Great but the average person in the street was far poorer.

The presentation of the "Irish Issue" as some sort of scheme concocted by the treacherous Europeans and troublesome Irish to force the UK to stay in the EU is also complete nonsense. The border between Ireland and the UK is a British creation (literally; they created it in May 1921). The crass ignorance of their own history by the current Tory government is only surprising in that it is not surprising; Nobody really expects people of the limited intellectual stature Borris or Rees-Mogg or May to understand the history of somewhere that they don't really regard as part of their own country. The craven sycophantic toadying interspersed with crass belligerence by the Ulster Unionist Party is also no more than could be expected.

It's a strange thing to miss someone of the ability of Margaret Thatcher. It's even stranger to miss Ian Paisley.

Brexit is the old Tory establishment reasserting their dominance over the British people in what may be grand but is definitely a very unequal Union.

          • The thing that those supporting their exit don't understand is that the public of the rest of the EU don't give a fk if they leave or not. The UK was never fully in the EU to begin with. If they were they wouldn't still be dealing in pounds.

Bye Bye and enjoy your dreams of PAST greatness. The Empire is dead, thank god.

I have the image that UK always got a good or special deal from EU. I also think that this is why they are having such problems with the negotiations, as they cannot for some reason comprehend why they are not getting a special deal for leaving EU when they had one staying in.

This should be reposted daily until this whole sad mess comes to whatever conclusion it comes to. The bolded part is especially apposite, though applied too narrowly. This is 'little England' incarnate. History, law and international relations aren't complex phenomena requiring nuanced understanding, they are a series of cartoonish anecdotes or dot points where the moral lesson is always 'England is right, everyone else is bad or stupid'. It is no wonder such people take shelter in the comforting myths of 'Churchill saves civilization' and live on a diet of angry, middle aged men fulminating on youtube. Those are the intellectual borders of their universe. All wisdom comes from mirrors. To expect more would almost be cruel.

So, when the iceberg of Irish politics and EU regulations hit SS Brexit there should be no surprise that we get fanciful pronunciations about 'annexation' combined with the expected foot stamping, hand waving and jumping up & down. You can't understand things whose existence you are unable to accept in first place. The world is simple because they say it is, and any consequences that follow from this worldview are the fault of everyone else. Personal responsibility is always for other people.

                              • One of the many ironies here is the Tories talking about vassil States when that is exactly how they have always treated Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. They are an English party which rules the UK. They are the party who imposed Pole Taxes on Scotland first to see how it went before imposing them "at home".
