  • North Korea nuclear: Plutonium reactor 'restarted'

North Korea has restarted a plutonium production reactor that could provide a stockpile for nuclear weapons, US intelligence chief James Clapper says.
He also said the North had taken steps towards making an intercontinental ballistic missile system.
It comes days after the North launched a long-range rocket, which critics say is a test of banned missile technology.
Last September Pyongyang said its main nuclear facility at Yongbyon had resumed normal operations.
The reactor there has been the source of plutonium for its nuclear weapons programme. The North carried out its fourth nuclear test in January.

"We assess that North Korea has followed through on its announcement by expanding its Yongbyon enrichment facility and restarting the plutonium production reactor," Mr Clapper told the Senate Armed Services Committee.
"We further assess that North Korea has been operating the reactor long enough so that it could begin to recover plutonium from the reactor's spent fuel within a matter of weeks to months."

At last it appears that the Chinese are getting 'uncomfortable' with what North Korea appears to be up to. It remains to be seen if they have the political commitment to rein in their rogue client state.

The problem with NK, the leaders live in their own world within a world. The leaders will not experience hardship, it's something they can ignore.

Maybe its time we sent this aircraft with this bomb:

and in 20 or so hours that facility would be dust. Maybe also send few to bomb the rocket launch sites and rocket factories.

The problem is that since the Korean War the North Koreans have learned to did deep and even the most powerful non nuclear bomb can only destroy for far into the earth.

North Koreans would certainly appreaciate such trophy.

What the massive crater? Or do you think the Norks are actualy capable of stopping a B-2? I know you like to overestimate them but that's just silly.

There is nothing to do about it,unless starting a nuclear war .

The best is to do nothing, unless if NK starts a nuclear war, and than, it would not be difficult to nuke them .

Unless,unless...Maobama has destroyed the military power of the US .

Agreed. The best course of action is to watch them and wait. North Korea is unsustainable and with China growing more and more tired of their antics it's only a matter of time before the system collapses from within.

Not destroyed, just injured. Our stupid government likes to do this every few decades and it always take some big jolt to wake them up again but we always come back.

Serbians shot down a F-117. Shouldn't be a problem for the North Koreans to shot down a B-2.

In case of a nuclear war, it will be to late to save SK and probably some Japanese and US cities.

The Serbians were never able to down a B-2 though and they have experience producing and fielding surface to air missiles. Arms exports were the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia's (Serbia and Montenegro's predecessor) main source of revenue. Meanwhile North Korea cannot export arms and is barely capable of supplying its own military with working equipment. I believe the most advanced SAM's NK has are MANPADS that are locally produced licenced versions of Strela 2 and 3's and Igla's. To date, no stealth aircraft has been downed by a MANPAD and doubt ever will due to most stealth aircraft incorporating infrared signature hiding like the B-2. The B-2 also flies far higher than a MANPAD can reach.

Which is the whole point of deploying THAAD to South Korea. The Norks aren't capable yet to reach the continental US but they could reach Guam probably.

What with what air defenses? They don't have anything even close to that advanced. Assuming anyone does. You forget that the F-117 was first generation stealth technology. It was highly inefficient and not nearly as effective as what came after, that's why they aren't in service anymore. The B-2 is an entirely different system based on an entirely different stealth model. It has yet to be proven if anything currently in use is capable of detecting it, for obvious reasons, so comparing it to the Nighthawk is apples to oranges. What you're suggesting is like saying "Our air defenses down an Il-28 so we should be able to shoot down a Tu-22M just as easily." Doesn't work that way.

It's also telling that B-2s have flown over North Korea several times with impunity. If they Norks could have shot them down, or even known they where there, they probably would have tried. They've never hesitated to fire on any foreign forces that have entered their territory in the past after all.

Or more likely all those fish when all the North Korean missiles crash into the Pacific, like they always do.

It's what we could see if there is a war. However looking at the total number of B-2 produced and their activity in different conflicts, I'm very sceptical regarding their performance againsta determinated adversary with sufficient quantity of AA defenses.

Apart if the missile is sent into space, it will always crash somewhere on Earth. Your campain obvious.
