  • China's Bat Woman

    This is a good read.

How China’s “Bat Woman” Hunted Down Viruses from SARS to the New Coronavirus
Wuhan-based virologist Shi Zhengli has identified dozens of deadly SARS-like viruses in bat caves, and she warns there are more out there
Shi Zhengli, known as China's “bat woman” for her virus-hunting expeditions in bat caves, releases a fruit bat after taking blood and swab samples from it in 2004.

Probably a good idea for the Chinese to stop eating bats then.

Bat meat is also commonly consumed in Oceania, Australia and Africa.

And? Chinese dietary eccentricities have so far caused tens of thousands of deaths and probably will cause hundreds of thousands before this is all over as well as plunging the world into recession.

The Chinese should be given a choice, they can either continue to live in the modern interconnected world in which case they have to give up all this 'poverty food' or they can go back to being isolated in which case they can do what they want.

The Chinese can probably say the same about those cultures who dine on squab (pigeon), guinea pig, whale, insects, and other exotic creatures.

The Chinese also have perceived medicinal uses with bats. Bat excrement is used in traditional Chinese medicine as a treatment for night blindness.

When was the last time one of those caused a pandemic?

Once this is all over we cannot allow there to be another repeat. The Chinese either modernize or stay isolated. They can't do both. They are a rich country now, it is about tiime they started acting like one.

What someone does in a remote part of Bolivia is irrelevant. China is a modern wealthy country fully connected to the rest of the world. Their dangerous eating habits are causing tens of thousands of deaths.

I'm fairly certain that the Chinese also eat those and more. They eat things not out of necessity, but of believe in medicinal values.

I believed at first it was the wet markets but now I think its a coverup story, I think it was accidentally released from the lab in Wuhan. The type bat the virus had resided in wasn't being sold at the market.

                          Indonesia et al. apparently:

Remember that clip that went viral a month+ or so ago of a woman eating a whole bat in a bowl of some kind of buillion? Further investigation turns that out that wasn't from China, or even recent, but filmed several years ago in Palau, east of the Phillippines.

All Chinese also aren't in one mind about the dietary preferences when it comes to luxury foods. Northerners can be as bemused by westerners about some of the preferences of the south.

Though there does remain certain specific problem with traditional Chinese medicine. Otoh part of that comes from there simply being very many Chinese involved. Things considered inoccuous in the west like keeping cats as pets also comes with increased risks for similar zoonosis, since cats are completely riddled with interesting virus. And unlike the bats we tend to hang around them socially.

New evidence suggesting COVID-19 came from a Wuhan virology lab is hard to ignore.
Scientists were allegedly researching coronaviruses in bats late last year

Of COURSE researchers research corona viruses in bats, since that's where the things hang out.

They do research on sneezing hump-back whales too, another source of zoonoses.

Before everyone went nuts in China, Russia, Italy and the US and started accusing each other of cooking up viruses to hurt each other, this was the fairly esoteric expert field of epidemiologists.

The way this is going ANY country doing qualified research in it is going to be suspected of being involved in an attack on whatever-country-of-choice simply by doing effing research!

This really is the Politics-of-Fear talking.
