  • India puts 'man eater' lions on trial

This is a legal system that won't do a thing about rapist, but....

Officials in India have "arrested" 18 lions as they try to find a man eater suspected of killing three people.

Forest officials in Gujarat state will test the lions' prints and excrement in an attempt to identify the killer.

The "guilty lion" will be kept in a zoo for life while the others will be released back into the Gir sanctuary, the officials told BBC Hindi.

Six attacks on humans have been reported recently near the sanctuary, the only habitat of the Asiatic lion.

Gujarat's top forest official, JA Khan, said that the lions had been "arrested" over the past two months and were now being held in separate cages while tests were carried out.

"We think we have pinpointed the guilty lion, but we are still awaiting the results of nine more animals," he said.

This is more than a little stupid. There are thousands of people trespassing in this wild life refuge and they drive Lions off their kills. I would be more impressed if park security got rid of all the people living in there. They can mobilize to catch a "man-killer" but not to remove illegal trespassers?

Urban - were the lions read their rights before being arrested?

I wonder if they signed a waiver allowing the Park Rangers to check the dna in their scat?

Load of rubbish - no court is involved and no legal process they just need to find out which lion did it and isolate it. Lions and tigers usually avoid attacking humans unless provoked and its usually only those who are unsuccessful hunters that become man eaters (often those who are ageing and can't sprint as fast as their normal prey). The problem is that once they find out how easy it is to kill a human they continue to do so. It is therefore necessary to detect which one has turned man eater and neutralise it. In the old days man eaters were shot so putting it in a zoo might be regarded as more humane. All the OP stuff about rapists and courts is pure prejudiced nonsense.

The park is also having a problem with inbreeding among the lions. Introducing a "cousin" to its relatives in the Zoo will not help the breeding line. It seems ALL Asiatic Lions are closely related now. Inbreeding this much is leading to all kinds of problems. They really should introduce a couple of African Lionesses to diversify the bloodlines.

In 2006, the Central Zoo Authority of India stopped breeding Indian-African cross lions stating that "hybrid lions have no conservation value and it is not worth to spend resources on them"
The only pure Asiatic lions are the ones in India All Asiatic lions in zoos in North America and Europe are in fact cross breeds.

God forbid that these people in India would have to spend extra money on wildlife! Marrying cousins is not a problem in India for the humans so why should they care about the only Asiatic Lions?

There was a study done in East Africa on a preserve in an ancient volcano crater. The study found the Lions were all related and in fact descend from a pair of Lionesses. Every so many years the genetic problems would get so bad there would be a die off. Then another pair of Lionesses would enter the crater and start up a new Lion population.

In the wild, female Lions will travel to new prides, thus ensuring a little new diversity. Prides come and go as well.

What will these guys do when the wild Lions begin dying and/r become infertile?

Actually they don't want to loose the only genuine Asiatic lions left in the world by cross breeding (the way real wildcats are being lost in Scotland). They are already spending money on investigating genetic profiling to determine which of the lions left to them have more variability left than others and perhaps do some AI to increase this in the prides.

Since you know a little bit on the subject, help me out. How much money are they spending this year on creating a genetic profile on the Lion population? Who paid for the capture of the Lions they are holding right now? How many Lions do they have a profile on now?

As for my prejudices, they come out when they are needed. It sounds like the guys in charge of the Asiatic Lion population are not in a hurry and see no reason to get it done. I read articles on the mindset of these people and they are hiding behind an excuse of keeping the genome pure. They have already tested a number of the Lion population and found they are too closely related to stay healthy. At least the captive population in world zoos are doing something about the population under their care. They did dna tests on the captive population and found they are almost as closely related to the wild population as the wild ones are.

Some healthy Asiatic Lions with a bit of African genes is better than losing the wild population in India. Do we really want to have to reverse engineer the group like they did with Przewalski's horse?
