  • Philippine Presidential Election

Some are comparing one candidate to Donald Trump. Duterte has a double-digit lead in the latest opinion polls.

Rodrigo Duterte launched his profanity-laced campaign to become president of the mainly Catholic Philippines with a tirade against the Pope that included branding the revered figure’s mother a prostitute. On the hustings since, the 71-year-old has joked about wanting to rape a murdered Australian missionary, and vowed to kill tens of thousands of criminals then pardon himself for mass murder.
Duterte has also bragged about his Viagra-fuelled serial adultery, called his daughter a “drama queen” for talking about being sexually abused, and told lawmakers he would shut down Congress if they did not follow his orders.
Using such tactics – which have drawn comparisons with US Republican Donald Trump and similarly upended conventional political wisdom –Duterte has become the shock favorite to win Monday’s election.

Does this translate to holding up to holding up two fingers to everyone else? Very Trumpian indeed.

He is considerably nastier than Trump. I don't imagine neighbouring nations or allies of the Philippines are very enthusiastic about the possibility of him winning. he has already had a run in with Australia over his comments about an Australian nun who was raped & murdered. I believe this is not an isolated incident. With China in a predatory mood the Philippines needs all the friends it can muster right now. This guy doesn't seem inclined to help with that.

Sounds similar Trump's 'run in' with Mexico. Trump ended up getting an apology from Vincente Fox immediately after Cruz and Kasich dropped out.

He's going to win, unless there's cheating, in which case it's going to be big trouble.

Well, the "trouble" with the dead Australian should've been a non issue as it was something that happened around 20 years ago.

I actually expect things to be a bit more peaceful, specially in Mindanao. Except, of course, for criminals. I expect they'll try to keep a low profile the next few weeks...

The comment was still in very poor taste. Making jokes about raping women, especially one who was actually raped & killed, is low life behaviour. Certainly not befitting a presumptive national leader. In itself it isn't going to endanger relations, but his reaction was concerning for someone who intends to be a national leader.

I shudder to think what might happen if issues arise again on the border with Malaysia or with China or Taiwan. A level head is needed. Lets hope he acquires one by the time he is sworn in.

It was indeed in poor taste. He's an admitted womanizer, and he's been blamed for extrajudicial killings. But, imho, the reason he's so popular is because the people are so frustrated with the status quo, and his slogan captures it: "change is coming". He has vowed to stop criminality and corruption, and the growing menace of drugs. I do have some concerns, but seeing as it seems he'll be a clear winner, I really hope he can deliver.

                    hahaha yeah.

and btw... so frustrating, but one of the lead contenders for VP is the son of the dictator that got evicted almost 30 years ago. And now, looks like the son is all set to come back. As the mother said now, "the wheels of justice grinds ever so slow, but it grinds ever so fine"... not quite how it's supposed to mean...

Trump is a salesman, and a highly successful one. When he started a lot of people, myself included, figured it was a joke.

He has tapped into the US voter's love of an underdog, and the apathy to the current generation of bland professional politicians saying the same old same old.

Just how much of his campaign persona is simply salesmanship and how much of it is real is open to debate, but the fact is that he has beaten much more experienced politicians to grab the primary, and the Democrats are visibly afraid.

This guy seems to be taking the same style, adjusted for his culture. Obviously being a womanizer is not as much a liability in PI than in the USA.
Any man can hold his place when the bands play and women throw flowers; it is when the enemy presses close and metal shears through the ranks that one can acertain which are soldiers, and which are not.

There is speculation and fear that his electoral victory would bring in a new age of Marcos' like Martial Law and dictatorship.

He even said he'd do very bad things to the Philippine Congress if they stand in his way.
