  • Muslims currently (at risk) under attack in CAR by Christian Militias

Is militia a correct word here for the Christian groups?

The CAR is a country with over 80% Christians, while(currently speaking) the Muslim population live in the minority

    Central African Republic

Muslims in Central African Republic (CAR) are being "butchered like sheep'' by Christian militias, and the deployment of French troops has not improved their safety, according to witness accounts from refugees arriving on evacuation flights to Mali.

On Thursday, a UN official identified "the seeds of a genocide" in CAR, unless the international response to the crisis is ramped up.

As he stepped off a five-hour flight in the Malian capital, Bamako, refugee Hissčne Ibrahim, 21, said: "I was scared. I saw people killed in front of me and cut up like animals. They cut the hand off the Muslim and put it in his mouth. In that environment you end up thinking that if I stay here I am going to go crazy and become like these people who kill people."

Ibrahim, a student, said he and some 600 other Malian refugees who arrived in Bamako on flights this week had managed to escape CAR, thanks to a military escort to the airport. "We had left our homes last month and had been sleeping at the Senegalese consulate in (the capital) Bangui. There is no way Muslims can go anywhere near the airport by themselves because there are only Christians there. If you go there you will be chopped up in bits."

The violent, unnecessary actions of these Christians in CAR and elsewhere are not, IMO representative of the vast majority of the followers of Christianity. I was interested in others thoughts on this, are these cases of which (violence toward Muslims in CAR) to blame on religion or human error?

    http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/18/world/...blic-violence/

Gunmen launched grenades and used machetes against Muslims being evacuated in a truck convoy in Central African Republic, killing at least three children and 19 adults, a humanitarian group said Saturday.

The convoy was carrying mostly Muslim families from the village of Vakap when a grenade was launched into the trucks, said officials with Save the Children, a U.K.-based aid group. Attackers hacked many victims with machetes, the group said.

    more,

As for the CAR, it should be noted Muslims are living in the minority of the population (around 10%). A new President ,a female and unsure of her religion, was just very recently sworn in as President of the CAR a midst the recent chaos. There is a Christian (terrorist?) militia group, known as ''anti-balaka'' (anti-machete) operating in CAR and carrying out attacks against Muslims. Prior to this new President, a Muslim, Michel Djotodia did take over power and installed himself as President of the CAR, with the assistance of a collection of Muslim(terrorist?) militias known as "Séléka". Michel Djotodia was the first Muslim President in CAR history but was around for only a short term of about 6 months.

A Christian militia is suspected to have killed 12 people, including children, and wounded 30 others in an attack in the Central African Republic (CAR), officials say. -from dec 4th 2013

Where is Snoopy when we need him?
Any man can hold his place when the bands play and women throw flowers; it is when the enemy presses close and metal shears through the ranks that one can acertain which are soldiers, and which are not.

The big problem here is that Muslims are so damned tasty. Hard for the average God-fearing Christian to resist really.

It seems like parts of "anti balaka"(Christian), along with parts of Séléka(Muslim) do include terrorist elements. Seemingly, the impoverished areas of CAR will lead to easy recruitment of folks into both anti balaka and Séléka.

Nevertheless, this is certainly a tumultuous time in the CAR if your a Muslim a-midst the majority of Christians. I am now reading, their are cases of Christians cannibalizing Muslim corpses in the CAR. This is an ugly situation in the CAR.

Actually, I got to it a while ago, but some folk got all huffy & it got killed.

Apparently talking about Christians the way they so often talk about Muslims is enough to get some folk very upset.

The conflict in CAR is tribal. It's a hellhole that is one of the worst places on the planet.

Well, for some, it's an excitingly rare opportunity to say "Look! Christians are bad people too!"

As you said, these conflicts are tribal. And they predate the local religions.

                            Not here apparently...

                            Religions:
indigenous beliefs 35%, Protestant 25%, Roman Catholic 25%, Muslim 15%
note: animistic beliefs and practices strongly influence the Christian majority

Actually it is closer to 15% and they live in the northern part of the country. Most of those people migrated there from Chad & Sudan. The movement south into Bangui was a result of the Seleka assault on Bangui in March of 2013 when they overthrew President Bozize. Dig deeper into the Seleka and you will find out that a high percentage of them were not Central African. When Seleka was dissolved in December 2012...the fighters didn't leave.

There is a lot more to this story than a simplistic Christians vs Muslims.
