I picked up all episodes of this oldie but goodie doco series (and for under 50 bucks! Hows that for valur!.

The footage is nice to see again even if the narration is somewhat outdated.

    and there are certain extras.

I'll be busy for few nights anyway!

I, also, picked up a copy a couple of weeks ago at a half price bookstore.
It came with an episode on the making of the World at War, which I had never seen before.
Iíve been working my way through it a little at a time.

It is a gem of a series, but sadly outdated in several significant areas, particularly concerning the Eastern Front.

It was an astonishingly expensive series to make at the time, and holds up pretty well for most subjects.

I must say that my old copies of this series were on severly stretched video-tape, so it was just nice to listen and look at it all without all the technical side effects.

I prefer to have the footage un-coloured, as it is then obvious which were black and white to begin with...

Anyhow, a great way to fill in airtime again!

The World at War was a 1973 production.

Ultra was episode 6 of a 1977 BBC documentry, The Secret War. The episode was called Still Secret. It used to be on Youtube, but is blocked on copyright grounds, although other episodes are still there - parts 3, 5 and 7?

In fact I've just added that series to my wish list .

... as in the first series related book, "The World at War" by Mark Arnold-Forster, RN that came out with the series, is copyrighted 1973-74 as well (there's another one, by Richard Holmes, that came out just a few years ago). The ULTRA secret didn't appear in print until F. W. Winterbotham's, "The Ultra Secret" (who'd a thunk it!), published in 1974.

Yes, I remember the series "The Secret War", and its footage of the giant Panjamdrum, and the first time I had ever heard the word "COLOSSUS" in relation to intelligence.

"Dated", perhaps, but you got to see a lot of the men who had top positions being interviewed. Doenitz and Galland from Germany, Mountbatten and a host of others from the UK... it is really something to see.
And not something you will see elsewhere.

                      Agreed .

It merely needs updating, especially concerning The Eastern Front, not a major overhaul, or even a major re write .

I recently picked up this DVD set as well.

The interviews are what keeps this at the top of the heap for me.

Quite, perhaps a reference to "Tube Alloys" might be appropriate.
The dulcet tones of Sir Lawrence Olivier would be sadly missed.
