I would rate him at least in the Top Five at least. Somebody well have to convince me of four that are better.

Rarely picks a dud film and even if he does he can carry it without "scene stealing" ie that silly film about the guy living in the airport was watchable because he was in it. Oh, and he keeps his nose clean.

      Danny Trejo!

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Trejo

Actually, he is not much of an actor, since he plays mostly roles from his young days.

I like him, because he is probably the only character actor today. In today hollywood action movie, action heroes are played by young actors who have, by age of 20, been several times at drug rehab programs, and probably never seen action.

And if we compare it to crew of "Dirty dozen", we can see that most of them went to war, and worked hard on ordinary jobs. These guys were tough, they didn't just look tough.

For leading actors Crowe, Hanks, Washington, Freeman, Eastwood wholeheartedly get my endorcement, but here are a few I haven't seen mentioned yet, sometimes in a leading role, but often in a major supporting role...

        Jeff Bridges
        Gene Hackman
        Sam Elliot
        Tim Roth
        Tom Sizemore
        John C. Reilly
        Phillip Seymour Hoffman

        and my personal favorite...

        Steve Buscemi
        Lance W.

        Peace through superior firepower.

I just thought of a couple more great character actors...

Hugo Weaving (I mean LoTR & the Maxrix Trilogy)
            Joe Pantoliano
            Dennis Hopper
            Robert Duval

Some of these guys made their best movies longer than 20 years ago, I figured they qualified because they have been very active the last 20 years nontheless.
Harrison Ford would be a close second as my favorite actor, after Tom Hanks. If they are in the cast of characters in a movie then I'll go see it.

                  Who cares about actors?

                  What about the actresses?

I would add another to the list, Samuel L. Jackson especially for his performance in Jackie Brown. Also he has been married for 30 years and was once convicted of holding his college governors hostage in the late 1960's as part of the Civil Rights protest.

Since you mention the Coen Bros, lets not forget Sam Elliot:

I almost (and should have) put Goodman on my list. Has anybody been watching him in HBO's "Treme"? He plays a pissed off Tulane professor in post Katrina New Orleans, ah...what amaster of profanity.
