  • Defiance

I saw a TV promo for the movie Defiance that premiers in the US on January 16th. It stars Daniel Craig (AKA 007) as the leader of what appears to be a Russian/Polish (?) partisan group fighting the Nazis. Has anyone heard anything about this movie? What I saw in 30 seconds seeming interesting.

My first reaction - not another Holocaust-themed movie. I think I'm beginning to OD on them.
Daniel Craig's latest film Defiance tells the powerful story of three Jewish brothers who fled the Nazi occupation of their Polish town, set up a partisans' camp in dense forest and fought back.

But the film has provoked controversy over whether the Bielski brothers, who helped more than 1,200 Jews to escape from the ghettoes, were courageous heroes or ruthless killers who, fighting alongside Soviet partisans, committed atrocities against ethnic Poles.

I posted a review to the AGG front page. I thought it was pretty good. The story is incomplete (it stops in the spring of 1942) and it glosses over some of the unpleasant truths, but it tells an important story. Craig as Tuvia is pretty good - he's not an invincible superman, he can be indecisive at times.

I saw this on saturday and I liked it alot. I thought that a movie of this type hadn't been made before and was pleased to see it come out.

Plus I'd been waiting for eight months to see it...well worth the wait!
                Best regards, Hufflepuff
