Actually, Allahmit, the insertion of parts of interviews with Hitler's former private secretary was totally 'factual'. I have seen similar interview segments with the lady when she was 20 years younger, but recounting similar events and feelings to those she recounts in 'Downfall'.

Valkyrie (Tom Cruise to play Stauffenberg)
but what do Valkiries have to do with all this?
for as we all know, none of them ever planned to assasinate Wotan.

From 1943 on, Operation Valkyrie was the code word under which the planned assassination of Adolf Hitler and the arrest of Nazi leadership, disarmament of the SS and taking control of German cities by officers of the Wehrmacht became known.

NB that before 1943, 'Valkyrie' was the code word for the plan of the Wehrmacht how to deal with a potential revolt amongst the dissatisfied German population, POWs, forced labourers and even people in concentration camps.

A huge role in this plan was given to the reserve army in Germany as most of the regular units were abroad. Only Hitler and certain commanders of the reserve army were allowed to declare 'Valkyrie'.
The fact that commanders other than Hitler could declare Valkyrie and thus have an army within Germany at its command to counter the SS was not lost upon the conspirators.

Hmm...wouldn't that be one hell of an alternate timeline. Wehrmacht and Heer verses the SS, in a battle to control the fate of Germany.

Watched this film yesterday and was very impressed. I normally dislike Cruise and "Hollywood" war films, but this was very well made, never tried to overplay the action and kept strongly to the original story.

There is good potential for an alternate history film with Himmler and a loyal faction of SS trying to take back Berlin and the question of whether or not the Allies/Soviets would accept a conditional surrender at this stage of the war.
