  • The Sergeant in War movies

The figure of the sergeant in war movies as always been a popular one. They are often charismatic, hard-bitten, irrespectful, loud-mouthed, loyal and hard fighters. Why do you think it is so? and what are your favorite sergeant characters?
    To name but a few:

Dylan McDermott as Sgt Frantz in Hamburger Hill
Tom Beranger and Willem Dafoe as Sgts Barnes and Elias in Platoon
Tom Sizemore as Sgt Horvath in Saving Private Ryan
Sean Penn as Sgt Welsh in The Thin Red Line
James Coburn as Stg Steiner in Cross of Iron
Donnie Wahlberg as Sgt Lipton in Band of Brothers
    R. Lee Ermey as Sgt Hartman in Full Metal Jacket
Sam Elliot as Sgt Plumley in We Were Soldiers
    ...

Did John Ford think every sergeant in the US Cavalry was Irish?

No... He had German and French sergeants too...

Mexican actor Pedro Armendáriz played French Sgt. Beaufort in Fort Apache.

You know there is a Beufort in County Kerry in Ireland.

But, yes, there were occassionally some other nationalities. I can think of Sergeants Wagner and Hochbauer from She Wore a Yellow Ribbon for one.

"Sam Elliot as Sgt Plumley in We Were Soldiers"

                  Loved the line:
                  "Beautiful day SgtMajor!"
(sgt Plumley) "what are you? a f***g weatherman?"

In keeping with the all Sgt's are of Irish decent theme, how about Sergeant Patrick O'Neill (played by Jeremy Slate) in "The Devil's Brigade". One of the funniest scenes in the movie:

Amateurs study tactics, Professionals study logistics.

This should be the very next ACG campaign . The top sergeant in movie history. The participants literally earn their stripes instead of a ribbon.

In addition to loving all of the portrayals of these sergeants, I have to say this is an excellent idea. Third from anyone?

To add a Sergeant, Gary Cooper as Sgt. Alvin York! And just to have a representation of the "non-American" side, John Banner as Sgt. Shultz ( I know NOZING!!), and Til Schweiger as Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz
