  • Rat Patrol

Just got me some Rat Patrol action on dvd.

Yummy, nothing like some good ole cheesy silly fun videos

Only thing that makes me wonder though. What on earth were the M7 priests the German portion of the cast are driving around supposed to be? Or was that the only thing with treads the show could find that had a gun on it?

It was the only "tank" that the producers could find that four guys in funny hats, speeding around in Jeeps, could realistically lob hand grenades into...

In other words...Make the show more realistic...

I havent seen that show since I was 12,Was the reference so horrid? I just remember them running about in jeeps and the same German officer was fighting them all the time.

        The show was intensely cheesy.

But then, cheese is good if done right. Although I usually only want cheese on a sandwich hehe.

Yeah that German actor eventually escaped into a soap opera as Victor Neuman (I think I have that right, I try to avoid the wife's soaps).

He changed his name though...Capt. Dietrich was played by Hans Gudegast...shortly after the Rat Patrol ended, he changed his name to Eric Braeden.

            Loved it

I remember when I was a kid watching that show, my dad and I would sit down and watch that. I just remember him drinking a lot of beer and laughing...

So we never took that show serious.
That being said i want to see that show again.

It's funny. We took stuff like that as gospel as kids. Now I watch "Over there" on FX. (one time) and Laughed my head off.

I guess truth really is the first casualty.

                Rat Patrol was cool.
I'm thinking about showing some episodes in class to show the kids what World War Two was like in North Africa.
And McHale's Navy to show the United States's Naval Service' contribution to the war.

Anyone ever see Bill Maudlin's film conversion of his book?

Incredibly funny, but the best part being how close to the truth the humour was. It's all dated in some cases though. Bill often mentioned he'd do a great comic, only to have trrouble with making it seem funny a week later.

But some of his stuff is timeless.

Some of the best stuff I have ever seen on the wars and conflicts of the past, often comes from the least intentional looking source.
I still say Good Morning Vietnam has been the best film I have watched about that war. And yes, to date, I have likely watched every film connected with it, and I have like a dozen documentary series about the conflict, all the way back to the Japan attack on the region. Plus numerous books I have read.

Nothing quite compares to Good Morning Vietnam.

                    This does.
                    I hated that movie.

Aries, you're correct, Eric Braden did become Victor on some soap...

I've never seen Rat Patrol, how does it compare to Combat which I have seen?

Rat Patrol and Combat are like Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and Spam.
                        Both are equally excellent.

Combat was entirely better I think.

Rat Patrol as a show, was like watching the Bay Watch of war series though

It was in colour Combat was black and white. Rat Patrol was cool action and guys shooting weapons that while silly were fun looking silly. Combat was a bit grittier.

I am amused though, that I have both. I also have all 3 seasons of Combat (yumm).

What's more disturbing Aries, You using Bay Watch as an analogy, or me knowing exactly what you're talkin about? And Slug, I'm getting a vision of what the cupboards are like at your house... Thanks you two.
