    UPDATE ON TOM HANKS MOVIE

The new Tom Hanks WWII destroyer movie begins shooting in Baton Rouge, La. in March. It has a budget of around $50 million. The screenplay is based on "The Good Shepherd" by C.S. Forester. The movie will be entitled "Greyhound". The destroyer will be escorting a convoy in the Atlantic in 1942. The production will use the U.S.S. Kidd which is a floating museum. The Kidd was a victim of a kamikaze off Okinawa.
On a personal note, I have slept several times on the Kidd with my History Club. Super psyched about the movie. Destroyers and their crews deserve this movie.

Forester's book "The Good Shepherd" was a great read and if the movie is based on the book it should be a pretty good take. USS Kidd is a Fletcher class destroyer, Forester's ship was a Mahan class. A bit different in layout but about the same size.

The producers should peruse Nicholas Monsarrat's book The Cruel Sea for material. It probably stands as the finest tale of being on convoy duty in WW 2 there is.

It was later made into a movie as well.

We haven’t had a decent WWII Naval film in decades, I’m looking forward to one about Tin Cans., my dad was on DD-802 toward the end of the war.
It was hit by a Kamikaze off Okinawa.

Whilst The Cruel Sea gives a good picture of life on board a British Corvette of the Flower class The Good Shepherd gives a much better idea of the command issues involved in escorting a convoy

It's from the 80s. He's had a few stinkers over the years. Mostly early in his career. Volunteers, The Money Pit and a few others are so so at best. Cloud Atlas from a couple of years ago isn't very good either.

That was just this side of unwatchable -- and that was with Abe Vigoda! The only good thing about that flick was that it got me laid -- or perhaps I was laid in spite of it.
