  • Why does Hollywood ignore the fact that the Romans fought in formations?

I would understand why they ignored it for so long but nov with handheld cameras we could finally see the battle from inside the formations. It's not that different from doing a good tank movie.

Will future movies finally depict how the romans fought accuratly?

I never see the Romans throwing their Pila in the movies. I assume it is an insurance matter, like the helicopters in Vietnam movies actually landing on the ground instead of hovering several feet above it. Also how many movies can afford to hire enough actors and train them in Roman line tactics?

"Gladiator" was terrible. They broke ranks and melee'd.

HBO's Rome does the best I've ever seen:

Drama. The real Roman way of war was methodical, economical, and effective.

Just like in modern war movies you seldom see teamwork, suppressive fire, or effective use of cover. Instead, you see guys standing exposed and blazing away madly.

Directors go for what 'looks cool' at the expense of everything else.
Any man can hold his place when the bands play and women throw flowers; it is when the enemy presses close and metal shears through the ranks that one can acertain which are soldiers, and which are not.

I don't know military personnel use more and more basic tactics these days and tank dramas can be interesting, being inside a testudo must be the same. Even in the last Rambo movie they had teamwork

The battle scene in Spartacus shows the legions advancing in cohorts.

The series or the movie? The Kubrick movie or the other one?

Kubrick movie. Google Spartacus final battle scene and you will see it on you tube.

Yeah, its getting better, but they have a long way to go.

At least the 80s habit of shooting from the hip with the stock folded has passed...

                          HBO series are usually excellent.

                          To name a few:

                          Band of Brothers
                          The Pacific
                          Rome
                          Game of Thrones
                          Deadwood
                          The Sopranos
From The Earth To The Moon
                          Boardwalk Empire
                          The Wire

Probably the best on TV overall IMHO.

I'll agree except for Game of Thrones. I don't care for the treatment & presentation of the series. Although they nailed the Lannisters-perfect casting.
