    We're talking about Destroyers and Destroyer-Escorts here. Depending on age and class, these types were armed either with 5" (about 127mm) guns, or 3" (76.2mm) guns. A 3" shell is only about the same size as one fired from a Sherman or T-34. I believe that the 3" gun on the M10 Wolverine was actually based on the Naval Rifle. A 5" gun is bigger, but the shell is still somewhere between a 105mm and 155mm in size. On D-Day, each gun team often attacked defensive positions singly. Keep in mind as well that the Navy was an early convert to the proximity fuse, so the shell would have exploded above the position.

      I'm tending to agree with Mountain Man here. The explosion in question comes in about the 2:10 mark in this video. Doesn't look like naval gunfire to me.
