I agree, this has always annoyed me. In defense of the movie directors, we have to point out there are insurance companies may will not allow them to detonate military grade explosives because of unacceptable risk to the insurance company covering the movie production. That's why traditionally they had to use cheap gasoline 'explosions'. Realistic explosions became possible recently because of the advances in computer-generated special effects.

Real explosions of military-grade explosives produce a tremendous amount of black smoke, not orange flames, especially if the filling is TNT. This is because a TNT reaction produces a very large amount of carbon, which is responsible for the black sooty smoke.

Magneto would be useless. Lead is not magnetic.

You know what really makes that ridiculous??

Owen Wilson as an action star!

                      Here's their sign...
In fairness for the scene from SPR; I believe that the destruction of the German position was as a result of Naval Gunfire. Earlier in the scene CPT Miller has a Naval Beach Battalion Radioman try to arrange gunfire; (he also gets into an argument with a NBB Officer). While that particular radioman is killed (and his radio destroyed) another one presumably got through. Several Destroyers and Destroyer-Escorts engaged in gunnery duels with German gun positions. (Best summarized by V Corps Commander MGEN Leonard Gerow's comment "Thank God for the United States Navy!" to Omar Bradley.) Having Miller interact with Naval personnel alludes to the gunfire support.

Can't be - naval gunfire would have caused a much larger explosion and greater dmaage.
